I’m a fan of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books and find they hold my interest through to the end. Although they become a little predictable at times, the plots are well thought out with surprising conclusions. I like the way that the reader becomes very familiar with Reacher and his personality so that you can fit into the story very comfortably. I would recommend all of the Jack Reacher books.

I'm a JR fan I suppose, I'll probably read them all (just starting #12). But I thought they improved noticeably at #8. This one being #7, mher!
Don't get me wrong, it was worth reading. But watch out for #8. And the bar stays raised in 9 thru 11. Definitely 4-star reads. I underestimated Child's wordsmithery before, his plots have become quite imaginative and his character can be brilliant at times. There are still a few suggestions I could make but I don't want to nitpick. I'd rather enjoy his work for what it is and for the considerable skills he brings to it. No way I could write stuff that entertaining.

Without Fail has surprised me as it is the first Jack Reacher story that I have not completely enjoyed. What has most disappointed me is the plot; it just seems so implausible, even for a work of fiction. In addition, I found it more difficult to feel any empathy for Jack Reacher in this story even though we learn quite a lot about his and his late brother's lives. As a result for the first time with a Jack Reacher story I struggled to maintain interest in the storyline and I found myself putting the book aside rather than finding any excuse not to put it down!
However, there are a number of aspects of this novel that I am sure many readers will enjoy: it has loads of detail about different types of guns which will appeal to anyone who loves technical minutiae in their thrillers; the various locations are described in a very atmospheric way which makes it easy to imagine the settings where the various action scenes occur; and finally there is even a hint of romance for those of us who don't like our fictional heroes to be automatons.
So, for me, not the best Jack Reacher thriller I have read to date, but as I have already read a number that were written after this novel was published, it will not put me off reading more in the future.

While on an extended holiday I started reading the Jack Reacher books. I am now close to finishing book 7. I have found all so far to be a great read and very difficult to put down. The stories, apart from following the same "drifter" background, are very different. I had read many Andy Mcnab & Chris Ryan books & wanted a change from the repetitive story lines. I enjoyed reading the aforementioned but started to find they followed a similar plot. I am pleased that there are 22 books in the Jack Reacher set so they should keep me going for a little while yet.

I've not read many of Lee Child's early Jack Reacher novels. This one felt like he might have been finding his feet a little.

First, a quick precis/primer about man-mountain Jack Reacher. He's a retired former military policeman who gets into excitement, as he travels about the US, rescuing people, and blowing things up.

In the book, Reacher is brought in to help defend the Vice President, because of course he was. Who wouldn't hire a long since retired policeman for the most important security detail of he life? Anyway, he's been recommended by someone close to him, and approaches the job with vigour and vim. The question is, can he and the secret services save the day?

The book itself wasn't a bad read. It just felt a bit posted in, or as if he was doing the novelistic equivalent of that.

I've been binge-reading Reacher stories for a couple of weeks now, and it's a mistake. Let a few weeks go by between indulging. That way you forget all the formula stuff that Lee Child puts in every story. When you read them back to back, you get to see how similar they are, and you get to realise what a totally commercial proposition it is for Mr Child to write these books. The result is admittedly a totally compelling page-turner, but I think I've had enough of Reacher's far-fetched deductions, his encyclopaedic knowledge of firearms, motor-cars, wine, bible verses, everything under the sun. It's gotten a bit tiring.

Reacher does what Reacher does, kills the bad guys, has his wicked way with the woman and makes a best friend with a dog called Fred (actually, I might have made that bit up).
