The worldwide bestseller - 1/4 million copies sold'Written by a World Barista Champion and co-founder of the great Square Mile roasters in London, this had a lot to live up to and it certainly does. Highly recommended for anyone into their coffee and interested in finding out more about how it's grown, processed and roasted.' (Amazon customer)'Whether you are an industry professional, a home enthusiast or anything in between, I truly believe this is a MUST read.' (Amazon customer)'Informative, well-written and well presented. Coffee table and reference book - a winner' (Amazon customer)'Very impressive. It's amazing how much territory is covered without overwhelming the reader. The abundant photos and images are absolutely coffee-table-worthy, but this book is so much more. I think it would be enjoyable for an obsessed coffee geek or someone who just enjoys their java.' (Amazon customer)For everyone who wants to understand more about coffee and its wonderful nuances and possibilities, this is the book to have.Coffee has never been better, or more interesting, than it is today. Coffee producers have access to more varieties and techniques than ever before and we, as consumers, can share in that expertise to make sure the coffee we drink is the best we can find. Where coffee comes from, how it was harvested, the roasting process and the water used to make the brew are just a few of the factors that influence the taste of what we drink. Champion barista and coffee expert James Hoffmann examines these key factors, looking at varieties of coffee, the influence of terroir, how it is harvested and processed, the roasting methods used, through to the way in which the beans are brewed.Country by country - from Bolivia to Zambia - he then identifies key characteristics and the methods that determine the quality of that country's output. Along the way we learn about everything from the development of the espresso machine, to why strength guides on supermarket coffee are really not good news. This is the first book to chart the coffee production of over 35 countries, encompassing knowledge never previously published outside the coffee industry.

1st edition(!)Very primitive book on coffee, wikipedia has more...The book looks good, but the content is rather poor...

an excellent book that looks great too
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 May 2019Verified Purchase
I really like this book. First impressions are that it looks brilliant, the pictures are great, and the cover is tactile (meant to feel like a coffee sack). In terms of the contents I think it's brilliant. It's easy to read, explains terms clearly and is very interesting. The photography is brilliant. The book talks about the origins of coffee, to process of production, different fruits locations and brew methods. All along the way the impact upon taste is commented upon. I would highly recommend this book for personal use or as a gift.

Beautiful Atlas from the Guru of Coffee
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 February 2022Verified Purchase
This is a tasty tome from 2007 World Barista Champion James Hoffmann, surely the most charming coffee guru on the planet.
First published in 2014 and now in its second edition, "jimseven" takes you on a journey through coffee "from beans to brewing", exploring, explaining and enjoying every aspect of coffee.
The hardback edition has a tactile, hessian style cover like a sack of coffee beans - a cute touch and boasts 271 pages packed with information and richly illustrated with beautiful photographs.
There are three main sections:
- Part One is an introduction to coffee covering varieties, harvesting, processing, how it is traded and a short history of coffee drinking.
- Part 2 "From Bean To Cup" covers roasting, buying and storing coffee, tasting and describing coffee, grinding, water for brewing, brewing basics, espresso and home roasting.
- Part 3 looks at coffee origins in a number of countries in Africa, Asia and The Americas.
Excellent coffee is important to me. If it's also important to you, just go right ahead and but this book. I bought it as a holiday read, not a reference manual. Hoffmann delivers. You won't be disappointed.

Interesting
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 November 2021Verified Purchase
I like coffee and wanted to know a bit more about what I was actually drinking. Its quite educational about the origins of popular coffee and educated me that basically there are two species of coffee with hundreds of sub species. It gives a broad outline of where everything started, the couple of types of coffee that started it all then it goes into specific regions, areas, farms around the coffee producing world which was like a reference book for coffee aficionados. I'm not a coffee connoisseur so I skip read that. Overall a very interesting book and educational. For me there was a lot of superfluous information that I didn't need because I'm not a barista but it gave me a greater knowledge of what I was actually drinking. A bit like a wine tasting afternoon for coffee. You might never taste a fraction of what you're reading about but at least you know what you're looking at and won't get fooled or overwhelmed by marketing hype from coffee sellers

Just the perfect balance of simplicity and useful information!

I wasn't exciting this book to be so good and complete. It's been on my wishlist for ages and bought it because the price went down to an amazing price. It provides information about the plant and beans, different regions where it's cultivated. How to grind it, the main brewing methods (sadly Turkish coffee is not explicitly mentioned), how to taste the coffee, among other things. It deserves its 4.4 rating on goodreads

An Excellent Coffee Table Book on Coffee!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 December 2014Verified Purchase
I know the author from the Home-Barista website. I knew even before reading that it will be a good book. However, after having bought it I can now confirm that this is indeed an excellent book. The compilation, with a lot of pictures, is styled to make it a "Coffee Table Book" ironically on the subject of coffee!
I leave it near my coffee machine for people to browse through. Guests invariably quiz me on coffee when they see my home coffee setup. Now, as it happens, I can just hand them this book to browse through as they sip a fresh cappuccino or a macchiato that I have just poured out using home roasted beans.
