I was greatly disappointed, it seemed to me the the message is if you want to live a simplified life you need money and quite a bit.

Pay for a gardener to come in and help and order up every exotic seed you fancy to grow vegetables and don't worry when they don't grow, you can order up more, also pay for a wonderful artisan bread making course whizzing from one beautiful location to another to then pay for a sewing course to mend holes in your cashmere sweaters. Please.

You will probably love it if you're middle class and like to hide your consumerism behind an earthy veneer, I however felt sadly let down after reading it as it was bit of "here's what you could of won if only you had more money" there's nothing simple about paying for all these services in my mind.

It felt as if it was peddling the opposite of what she claims she wants to achieve and flying to New Mexico on a whim is most definitely not within anyone I knows reach or that morally sound in my opinion.

I felt she was totally contradicting in her writing and it had more than a whif of condescending preacher talking to the plebs who need it explaining to them how to make marmite on toast?!

I have read all of Kate Humble's books, but this one is the one I like the least. Kate has made some research, but she contradicts herself, she is not keen on buying online but she is happy to sell her books on Amazon. She does not like Facebook, but is happy to use Instagram and Twitter. She dedicates a whole chapter on how she flew to New Mexico to help build a house made from used tyres and glass bottles, but has no intention to live in one and is happy to return to her stone house in Wales. She seems to have compiled a lot of anecdotes of people working with their hands and then written a book about them. Again she hasn't put many of her own experiences. I think that most people would know what is a pestle and mortar and how to make toast. A pleasant way to pass a few hours but nothing of substance.

I tried, I really tried, to get into this book but it just didn’t grip me. My overwhelming feeling was that Kate has no idea about a simple life and her musings about how to achieve one are so far removed from the average person’s life it’s incredible. One is left with the conclusion that in order to have a simple life one must also have a great deal of money!

I felt disappointed after reading this book. I so wanted to love it, but ... what I have discovered is that really the author doesn’t really live like most of us. She jets off to different places, goes on lots of artisan courses and has lots more resources to hand than most of us. Don’t buy if you really want to live a simple life.

Read this book during lockdown (Covid) when shops, pubs, leisure facilities all closed; a simple living was "enforced", everyone has had to learn to adapt - for me personally I've found/discovered or resurrected skills or things to do in this pandemic.
Kate's book shows the absolute pleasure of our glorious countryside, getting out and about in the hills and dales; having satisfaction in growing and nurturing food - from plant to plate.
Thoroughly enjoyable read.
Right I'm off now to bake my own bread!
