Product description
Poland, 1939, Antonina Zabinski (Jessica Chastain) and her husband are the devoted custodians of the beloved Warsaw Zoo. Then one day, their whole world is rocked to the core--the nazis invade Poland and establish the horrific Warsaw Ghetto. Now in a time chaos and brutality, the brave Zabinski family risk everything by covertly working with the Resistance to smuggle hundreds of Jews out of the ghetto to hide them in the zoo. But this brings them to the attention of the reich's evil new commander (Daniel Bruhl). Frightened, threatened and increasingly in danger, Antonina and her family show that in a world of fear, you can create a place of hope. By their heroic actions, the real-life Zabinski saved the lives of hundreds of Jews.

A must see

A touching reminder of the mostly unacknowledged heroes of the Holocaust.
The tension of this family losing most of their animals who they had an intimate relationship with, followed by the danger of liberating 300 polish jews from the Warsaw ghetto keeps you on edge all the time with them. This is a true story with bonus interviews with the reaĺ children who were there makés this an amazing film. Great visuals, magnificent story, great to see Daniel Brühl play against his usual gentle character as well as a magnificent performance by Jessica Chastain, who like the character she is playing formed a hands on bonđ with all the ànimals, all done with a polish accent! It will upset you to watch but ìs an inspiring well made movie that tells the story of suffering in order to help others.

An incredible couple
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 April 2018Verified Purchase
Antonina and Jan Zabinski were incredible people and “The Zookeeper’s Wife” gives a fictionalised account of part of their lives and in many respects does so, very competently indeed, and this is something that is confirmed in the “Making Of” feature. This is not a bad film, but for me it isn’t a memorable one for the right reasons. Beyond giving the known facts of what the couple did – and what they did was very great indeed, the film is a bit of a painting-by-numbers film and is too sanitised and too sentimental.
Antonina Zabinski is played by Californian actress Jessica Chastain, and I found the heavy accent that she gave her character a bit too distracting at times. The original dialogue of the film is spoken in English but whereas the native English speaker Chastain sounded almost a parody at times, Belgian actor Johan Heldenbergh who plays Jan Zabinski and German actor Daniel Brühl in his role as Lutz Heck, both sounded much more convincing with their “Polish” and “German” English dialogue. On top of any dialogue criticisms, at times the sound of animals and the noise from the soundtrack made the dialogue almost inaudible and I had to revert to the subtitles!
If you are familiar with Irena Sendler and the tv movie about her: “The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler” also known as “The Warsaw Ghetto”, then you might see similarities between “The Zookeeper’s Wife” and “The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler” also known as “The Warsaw Ghetto” – both are about incredible people and not dissimilar stories, but those stories are both shown cinematically not in the most impressive way.
The DVD offers a number of options.

Incredible bravery - excellent film
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 February 2018Verified Purchase
This is quite a shocking film, considering it is based on a true story. A very touching story of bravery during the war. Jessica Chastain is excellent too, she is such a diverse actor. I don't think I have ever seen her in a bad film.
