I didn't get any scrathes on it in the two weeks I wore it before I put the screen protector on it, but I was quite conscious of turning my wrist as I brushed past things, and I don't wear it during beach volleyball, which is a shame, because I'd be interested to track that activity. It has Volleyball listed as a trackable activity, but I can't imagine anyone actually wearing it doing any sport that involves contact (eg with the floor, or sand in my case). Answer:
About 1/2 inch (12mm) - the bottom is quite curved and takes a bit of getting used to how tight to have the band but once you find the sweet spot, you never notice.
