You could probably mount it this way as the bell also comes with its own battery. Although. It would be very easy to steal your Ring Doorbell if it was mounted in this manner (and you could watch it unfold all in HD :) ) - if you google stolen ring doorbell you can see this happens more often than you'd think. I have got it for more than 2 months and haven’t recharged it yet, so far so good.

First time charge took over 6 hours.

No , you don’t need to buy Alexa. Alexa is a digital assistant Amazon has built in their echo devices.
An Amazon account is all you need to make your selections of echo devices to work.
And they work almost perfectly.
