Ryland Grace wakes up - he’s on a ship on a interstellar voyage, with two long-deceased crewmates - and after the initial panic, tries to figure out how he came to be there, and what he’s to do. Gradually, in time changes in the story, the back history is filled in, and Ryland’s vitally important mission is revealed. From high school science teacher (following a falling out with academia) to world saver in one book. And along the way, he meets a friend - with an interesting angle on inter-species communication, and I learn a lot about space travel.
Following the disappointment that I found Artemis to be, this is Andy Weir back to his well-researched, slightly humourous, and unexpectedly touching best. A well-deserved 5 stars, and a Glad It’s Not Me (although I’d probably do exactly the same, in the same position.)
