This book explores the question of normality in a relationship. Marianne and Connell don't see themselves as normal and, indeed, they do have traits which give them some justification for thinking this. However, in reality they are just two young people exploring the realities of life and sex. I found the book rather long and tedious although I did form an attachment to the two protagonists and found myself hoping nothing bad was going to happen to them.
