Belatedly and somewhat initially hesitant after the average first book by Alex Michaelides, The Maidens was ventured into. Surprising, it was gripping from the start with a wonderful easy to read narrative with the occasional hint of darkness to come. The characters were not only believable but enjoyable, as was the Cambridge University setting. A thoroughly enjoyable read with an impressive weave of psychology and a dramatic reveal of an ending (that was intuited in part). The serial killer violence was not overtly graphic and so any original reluctance to pick up this book was misplaced. Better than his debut novel, The Maidens has a stronger crime fiction foundation and a four-star read rating.
