The LED light is not harsh at all to look at at night, and how much you are allowed to adjust the brightness is extremely helpful for any level of light or time of day.
The screen is about as responsive as my original kindle. I found the new kindle is a little more heavier, probably due to a larger battery due to light usage, but was easy to adjust to.
My only issue is the battery. It's...fine. But light usage spends a lot of power. Remember that in a well lit area to just turn it off. I did find having it on low, where the light isn't really visible, is quite handy to increase contrast between the white background and the text, but it spends a bit off battery life. I have to charge my device every few days.
