The lights are a very cozy warm white, they don't provide a lot of illumination, it's all about atmosphere!!
I removed the back of the box and discovered that there is room for 2 more batteries (see photo 1).
But the 2 empty AA battery spots don't have + or - connectors. So I removed the coil spring connectors from and old battery holder (photo 2), but you can remove them from any old battery device that is destined for the bin. (Note that the coils spring sitting on the table in photo 2 has an extender so it can reach across to the next battery spring therefore helping to create a parallel circuit) For the positive side of the battery I just stripped some copper wire and ran it across the top (photo3), putting a little loop where the nipple of the battery would be, crude but effective. Finally, I used some old ALDI 2,500mah batteries that were worthy of a cheapy project such as this. The original battery is 1,800mah so this increases your storage by over 4 times. So I did some tests, with the original battery in Melbourne in August, approximately daylight/night 10.5hrs/13.5.hrs and the original battery was quite good, on a partly cloudy day it could fully charge the battery, then last all night and a bit more. But when I put the 3XAA ALDI batteries into the solar lights and then outside for 2 days, they lasted about 90 hours constantly on. (BTW I hadn't installed the lights, I would just sit them outside then bring them inside again and see how long they would last until they went flat). So even though the original battery is quite good, on a cloudy day of which Melbourne has many, it would not last all night. But with 3 batteries this setup will last at least 3 or 4 cloudy days and still provide light on the 4th night. Anyhow I'm really happy with these lights, everyone in the family loves them. The solar lights are now installed on our back porch and it looks like you're looking up at the night sky and seeing the stars.
