What starts off as a seemingly lighthearted and familiar foray into the group life of a bunch of University friends quickly becomes a dark and disturbing examination of the very nature of existence itself. This book offers little hope and leaves the reader saddened and almost bereft by the increasing inevitability of its conclusion. I cannot help but wonder at the knowledge of Yanagihara that made it possible for her to even write this remarkable book. It is quite unlike anything else I have read and it is unforgettable. Hard to put down, but also hard to read for its subject matter this novel will catch you like a hare in the headlights.
