An enjoyable and well-written book.

This was an enjoyable and well- written book that held my attention all the way. However, I have two points of criticism. One is that the title, the blurb and the prologue led me to believe the book was mainly about the secret, but I had to read more than half the book before I finally came to it. The first 60% was simply a story about two girls spending a summer at Martha’s Vineyard. The balance didn’t seem quite right. My other criticism Is that the prologue doesn’t quite fit the rest of the book. The style is much more dramatic, as if it was originally an exercise in powerful writing and the rest of the novel came later. The horror of the incident does not quite fulfil the foreshadowing of the prologue.
