5.0 out of 5 starsGreat help, wonderful work.

My psychologist suggested this book as homework the first time he met me. I read it in one sitting.
Can't describe how I felt but I cried so much throughout the book and decided to listen to myself more after.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that has been ignoring their own inner voice or denying their own needs in their lives. Please treat yourself better, please know there are people that care.

3.0 out of 5 starsGet your eye glasses out if reading the paperback

I know this is EXTREMELY popular, but this paperback is very hard to read with the font and size.

I had to give up due to headaches and ‘squinting’. First book I’ve read that has needed eye glasses.

I’ll try and get hold of the hardcover. Hopefully the font will be typical of other hardcovers. Cheaper than buying glasses.

This is the best book I've read so far on PTSD. It's extremely thorough and comprehensive and there's so many amazing quotes and insights. But it's a tough read. Pretty much every chapter could come with a trigger warning. I only read it in short bursts and have breaks in between and pick it up again when I'm feeling more relaxed and positive. But I've learnt so much about why I feel and behave the way I do and it ultimately inspired me to get some support so it is well worth persevering with.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lot of technical language to begin with.

I bought this book for personal use and I'm still reading it slowly. It starts of with a lot of technical stuff which I have no doubt is very informative and beneficial for professionals of this field. I found it interesting and it has given me a better understanding but is just too in depth for me so I recently jumped onto the how to heal from trauma, I'm not very far along in this area but am finding it useful. Maybe once I have finished the section on healing, I will be ready to read more on how trauma affects and allows the mind and body to get stuck in the trauma cycle.

This is my second reading of this book, the first time I read it, I became overwhelmed, with anger and sadness. We effectively know why people are mentally disturbed, yet we continue to not address the elephant in the room which is underlying trauma, and throw blunt force chemicals at people instead of teaching them that they are not hopelessly flawed. Continuing to add more labels, identifying more signs and symptoms, makes for a thicker version of the DSM, but does little to help those who suffer, thankfully there are some who go beyond ego and profit and look for real answers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for understanding the impact of trauma

I really liked this book - it was very detailed on the impacts of trauma and non attachment and how it is experienced by the person suffering the abuse. The only criticism I have is perhaps the book could have acknowledged 'the genetic influence' a little more - you can still not suffer trauma and experience some of the side effects/symptons that are outlined in the book. However, it is excellent that the focus is on treating the symptons rather than just dwelling on DSM style diagnoses that often very subjectively allocated (or a label attached even when you do not meet the criteria)!

Finally, someone who really 'gets' trauma. A very well researched book, every psychologist needs to read it in this day and age. After doing a psychology degree in the 80s myself, and over 35 years of psychotherapy on and off due to massive inter generational trauma, nothing like this work was even touched upon. It's very readable too, for anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best psychology book ever

This book was amazing, written by someone who has a wealth of experience and who clearly genuinely believes in his work. It does detail some pretty horrific insights into what some people have endured in life as examples but, at the same time, uses these experiences to help build a case for managing trauma from the ‘source’ and not a symptom perspective. I loved this book. Changed the way I viewed myself, my family and my future. I would be surprised if anyone didn’t have at least one ‘AHA’ moment from reading this book.

Extremely informative and eye opening book. Love can der Kolk's openness and holistic approach, as well as the transdisciplinary therapy modalities. This book is a must read for anyone seriously interested in being more trauma-conscious and Whole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend this as a seminal book on the subject matter

Excellent book. Highly recommend it. It both taught me a lot and resonated / validated a lot of what I have been and am going through. A thorough profile of reasons, research and remedies related to many mental health issues, in a manner that is a delight to read. A book for both the person who has suffered and those who support them. A book I imagine I will re-read and/or refer to often while navigating through my own trauma.
