Book arrived today in pristine condition. The hard cover is amazing and will do a fanstic job protecting it's content. Have flipped through a few pages and am at ore with the images. Can't wait to read the content, which is gonna take a while due to its complexity and mass, 500+ pages. The book is larger than i thought dimesion wise. Excellent purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Champagne Super Book.

Excellent book with well designed, intriguing illustrations. Large and heavy. I've bought this for myself to learn a bit of outer space (rather than inner!) since I feel we're close to something significant. The text is readable on all pages I've encountered so far. Font is a serif, it's legible and a suitable size is used. Usually on black pages (common of a book on this particular topic) text becomes lost in space. Fortunately, it's not the case here. I'm making way way through the book slowly, absorbing facts, though it will definitely serve afterwards as a valuable reference book. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you ever needed to know in one big colourful book

This book was purchased for my 10 year old who is obsessed with everything to do with space. I opted for the more adult version over the front page colourful younger version as I knew he would whip through that one pretty quick although it looks like a great starter book with over 200 pages.
He was over the moon with this book and we had a quick look through it, this book is over 500 pages of beauty and quality and so much information! Very detailed which my son loves about it. He obsesses slightly over black holes and the largest stars and moons/centaurs/dwarf planets etc and you will find them all in here. All info is very relevant and upto date too and there's a great section on stars and constellations and sky charts too.
I've read through many similar book but nothing quite as emmersive as this one, I'm a little jealous and may need to buy one myself!
Well the worth money and if your little stargazer is quite a forward learner don't feel you need to get the more child friendly version.
I will be picking up the ocean one next as that's another area of interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book will entertain you for a lifetime

I just received this in the post, as I was looking just for a book with lots of nice pics of the planets/galaxies etc, but was so impressed, really by the amount of effort that must have gone into producing a book like this, I really felt I owed it to guys/gals who put this together as it really is a fantastic illustrated encyclopaedia of outer space.

It's an amazing book with 500 pages packed with photos, charts of the night sky and explanations of everything you could want to know and more about the space.

Just a note on it's structure, it's broken up into 3 main sections:

1 Introduction talking about a wide variety of things ranging from the Big Bang to binocular astronomy
2 The 'contents of the universe focussing on the planets in our solar system, then the Milky Way, and then other galaxies.
3 The night sky, which lots of useful maps of the constellations you will see for each month of the year.

A great resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing

Anyone interested in any way in our universe and our place within it will absolutely love this book. It is superbly illustrated. It handles the complex issues of the vast distances of the universe, the myriad stars and galaxies that abound, the probable beginning and the probable end with a clarity, richly illustrated by latest scientific pictures of the stars etc, that enables even the most innumerate person to grasp the immensity of our beautiful universe. In the true sense of the word it inspires awe. It also gives a very comprehensive map of what we see over our heads at night (those lucky enough to have dark nights unpolluted by urban lighting!) both in the northern and southern hemisphere on a monthly basis. I would recommend this book to anybody the least interested in the subject - it will inspire them!

1.0 out of 5 stars Book is 5/5 but impossible to deliver without damage

The book is superb and is a work of art so 5/5. Why the 1 star - It was inadequately packaged and the book was damaged during delivery, having been dropped on the top edge compacting the cover out of shape. Had to return it.

Ordered another copy from Blackwells and had the same problem the package was ripped open across one corner damaging spine of the book. Had to return that too.

It is a very heavy book and the standard packaging is sub standard - I would like to own a nice copy but as it stands this doesn't seem possible.

So sad to see such a beautiful book damaged because it cannot be packaged correctly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hugely impressive and ideal for the non-specialist

I have only started the first sections of this book but am truly bowled over by the level of detail available. Otherwise complex concepts are explained clearly and vividly through logical, bite-sized descriptions coupled with excellent illustrations. The layout permits its use as both a logical narrative, providing an easily-followed line of reasoning as well as a very useful reference guide. I cannot recommend this book highly enough

as a retired consultant physicist, i am used to excellent photographs of our universe through NASA sites like APOD. This book is more than a collection of pictures. It brings the awe and understanding out. I have it on my tablet computer that has an excellent screen (Samsung Galaxy S7+), and so I can peruse to my hearts content ....and with this book, you are truly in the presence of the gods.
