5.0 out of 5 starsWatch the doco, read the book
Reviewed in Australia on 23 January 2022
I am not one of those people who collect books for coffee table display reasons......I read the books (gasp). Do watch the doco, and read this book either alongside or after. Great photos, though Linda's were not that flash compared to the other photographer.

2.0 out of 5 stars viele winzige Bilder, belanglose Texte, Vorwort von jemanden, den niemand kennt
Reviewed in Germany on 23 October 2021

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice book..Poor quality photos
Reviewed in Canada on 7 November 2021

I had been waiting for so long. To me, it is deceiving because of the poor quality of the colour photos. All of the larger photos in this book are not crisp, clean, rather fuzzy, blurred..don't know how to say, but the black and whites are crisper, better. A friend of mine's got the original one from 1970, when you could buy the vinyl and the book in the same package..the pictures in his 50 years old book are still much better than those in my new one. Few large pictures from the original one are not included in this one, don't know why, as they added few new ones, but took out those. It is a nice solid book though, don't get me wrong, but as I said, I was expecting way more out of it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Reviewed in Canada on 1 January 2022

I am a very big Beatles fan and was looking forward to getting my copy of Get Back. It is my fault for not doing my research beforehand. I really didn’t enjoy reading the conversation transcripts. Most conversation - even the Fab Four- are painfully boring and repetitive. I had hoped for a well-written behind the scenes description of the Beatles’ activities/recordings from this period of their history. It is not. It feels like a money grab, to take advantage of (naively) enthusiastic fans who are eager to learn more about our favourite band. Too bad. I cannot recommend this book.

Have done 1 quick scan & then a slow one. My immediate reaction is, it's basically the original 'Get Back'
book with some different pics & better dialog transcription. Unfortunately a lot of the photos are blurry & seem out of focus. Buyers be happy you didn't buy through the Beatles store. $60 + shipping ! At least this book didn't immediately begin to come apart like the original 'GET BACK' book.
I think because of all the delays & fans anticipation this project will equally please & disappoint. A perusal of the track listing of the upcoming album release is a case in point. Over 20 hours of multi-track recordings, over a 100 hours of Nagra reels & this is the song selection ? Time & distance will judge if Apple hit a home run or they struck out. Don't throw out all those bootlegs yet.

2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible picture quality.

A big disappointment. There is an inconsequential and badly written foreword by Harif Kureishi, who is completely unrelated to this project, like there is a lack of participants in the Let it Be project.
But the worst is the picture quality, they are blurry, with no details. The re are 2 pillars for this book, pictures and text. The text is what it is, transcripts of the dialogues during filming, and the other one, the pictures, so 50% of the book is a waste. Looks worse than one of those cheap collections of Beatle photos you find in the bargain section of your local bookstore. Truly disappointing.

2.0 out of 5 stars A singular disappointment for discerning Beatles fans

The stories of the Beatles in January 1969 has always been a source of sadness within the fan base. Supposedly, the upcoming Peter Jackson film will rewrite some of that history. But whatever cheerfulness he can elicit from the many hours of film, there is little doubt but that January 1969 was the beginning of the end. Under other circumstances, if Brian Epstein had survived, if Yoko wouldn't have added Allen Klein and heroin to the mix, the tensions that were insinuating themselves into the up-till-then harmonious foursome might have been ameliorated by a scheduled separation similar to what occurred after the end of touring prior to the reunion to begin work on Sgt. Pepper.
But the statement by George two years later that he could never see himself in a band with Paul McCartney or the willingness of both George and Ringo (Ringo!!?) to play on How Do You Sleep at Night illustrated the sort of venom that began in January 1969.
The Let It Be album is probably the weakest of the Beatles output. But only seven months later, the band was able to take moments of joy from January 1969 and creates a glorious swan song in Abbey Road. This was, after all, the Beatles. And with that in mind, we could hope that the new Get Back book would present in format and contents, an appropriate memento of the genius, love, and humor of the act we've known for all these years.
Sadly, this is not the case. The book is filled with fuzzy photos usually quite small. And the edited conversations among the band adds almost nothing to the contents of the Get Back book that originally accompanied the Let It Be album.
This book might be acceptable if it was simply something included with the newly redone Let It Be album. But as a stand alone book with a sixty dollar price tag, it is a disaster. Whoever oversaw the production of this book on behalf of the Beatles owes them a major apology. Given the other work done by Ethan Russell and Linda McCartney, it is inconceivable that these are the best photos they took at the time.
We all understand that these super deluxe releases are usually going to be overpriced fan bait. But from the Sgt Pepper through the Abbey Road releases, there was overwhelming quality content that made those releases worthwhile. It is ironic that the album getting the biggest production upon the release of its super deluxe release is the weakest and that this "companion" book only adds to the sense of disappointment. Once there was a way . . .

2.0 out of 5 stars At best it's just barely OK...

For all the hype surrounding this book, the fact that we live in the modern digital age where scans of old photos are pristine and how painstakingly all the visual aspects of the upcoming Peter Jackson documentary have been subjected to, one would've thought that the photos in this book would be as sharp as a tack. They are not...not even close! It's a real shame that Sir Paul, Ringo and the rest of the group overseeing this project were not more demanding of the quality of the product they were pushing out to the public. To me, it was a total waste of money to receive what is essentially a photo documentary of the Get Back sessions and have all the photos (at least 90+%) be so out of focus. If this were MY book, I'd ask everyone to return them and wait for a second printing. It's really embarrassing.

I would have maybe enjoyed this book if I hadn’t watched the documentary. It is described as a complement to the documentary, but it really is only an excerpt.

The vast majority of the text is transcribed conversations, which often lack context and juicy details. If you have watched the documentary (or can watch it) I would definitely pass on the book.

The book is nothing more than the transcriptions of the dialogs of Peter Jackson's documentary and photographs taken then. Quite disapponting. Just one more item to sell to the fans.
