4.0 out of 5 starsRyen and Misha’s story is unlike anything I’ve ever read before.
Reviewed in Australia on 21 December 2021
I didn’t really like Ryen to begin with but as we got deeper into the book that changed. The growth of this character as the story progresses is amazing.

I adore Misha and everything he stands for. He is such a strong, determined and loyal character. I love how even though he is trying find himself and deal with his grief, he still makes it a point to be there for Ryen and stand up for people that can’t or won’t stand up for themselves. I just love him.

These two are literally perfect for each other. They are each other’s tribe. She’s just a lost girl, trying to fit in and he’s a lost boy, who doesn’t care to fit in. Together they compliment each other, especially when Misha finally brings out the true Ryen.

This book is more than just another romance book. It’s about pretending to be something that your not, about trying to fit in and the lengths some of us will go to not be alone. Even if it means, going against everything you are. It’s about self discovery, acceptance and finally finding peace.

The only thing I didn’t like about this book is the use of the derogatory term used towards Manny.
I did struggle to get into the first few chapters, It didn’t suck me in straight away. I also wish I got more answers regarding Misha’s mum.

I definitely recommend this.

Also, to anyone that is or was bullied, please remember, it does get better and you are not alone.

Ugh. So TOXIC.
I had a hard time finishing this. Misha/Mason was the most toxic character. And yet still played the victim? Nope.

While this was a well written book it still didn’t quite grab me like I was hoping. Though this is probably my first teenager book where they felt like teenagers- trying to fit into the harsh world of high school.
There also seemed to be a lot and nothing going on all at once.
I’m glad Ryen realised she could be herself. I’m more than happy that she went to help Manny. I’m glad JD and Ten proved more human and less Bully- I think I would’ve liked more of them in the book, especially JD. Trey definitely deserved what he got and so did Misha’s mum- I was disappointed that that was her actually.
It’s a good read. They’re all kind of bullies until they accept who they are and who they’ve hurt and start to make amends.

18+ contemporary romance
4/5 🌶

• Friends to lovers (kinda)
• Bully romance (kinda)

“You are my favourite place.” 💕

This was a hot spicy and romantic read… Kind of opposites attract except that one of the two is living a lie.

Friends the lovers however things develop in such a way that makes them kind of Enemies at times.

This book is a relationship driven story and it is kind of light on the plot… And that it’s not very twisty turny Like panel of the Douglas is other series, the devils night series… This book is in the same world as some of you may know one of the characters is a relation of one of the characters from the devils night series and the two characters in this book make an appearance in the series later on as well. But you don’t have to have read that series to be able to understand what’s going on in this series.Just wanted to make that comparison that if you were expecting the same kind of energy or vibe as the devils night series that’s not what you’re going to get in this particular standalone.

Having said that I love the character is the character development is great and there are some revelations you get to be shocked by still which is good. The romance was great and the spice was plenty.

While this book is certainly an 18+ because of the content the characters are still in high school last year of high school and have barely turned 18 themselves.

I really enjoyed this YA friends to enemies to lovers book!
The characters have written to eachother since they were young children and became best penpal friends . But when Misha realizes she’s in the same room at a party and meets her but realizes she isn’t who he thought she was all goes south fast.
There’s issues such as grief and loss , heart ache, school yard bullying , lies and deceit and all those juicy kinds of things a good angsty book has !
I loved their journey! And am curious about Misha’s friends and cousins stories now too ! (I think this is a spin off to another series
By this author but you definitely don’t have to have read them !

5 out of 5 stars! The book was the perfect mixture of slow burn and spice.

Spice: 3/5
Slowburn: 2/5
Value for money: 4/5

I enjoyed reading this book but found it was too short. The characters were well developed and had good chemistry. It is friends to lovers and enemies to lovers. There are a few plot holes and no major plot twists. A simple romance with a discreet cover.

I enjoyed this book. How teenagers eventually learn to accept who they are and stop the pretence. Misha and Ryen pen pals at 11, until one day Misha stops and Ryen feels lost. It’s a great YA read

4.0 out of 5 stars Characters with depth, story with twists and lots of steam!

The outline of this story had me intrigued from the get-go but I was wary as to how the author would portray our heroes' relationship though letters. I was really pleasantly suprised to find that their relationship that began as primary school aged pen pals to graduate year pen pals/best friends was handled beautifully! I'm not a huge fan of stories that jump to and from past and present situations. This story does NOT do that! And yet, we get a wonderful understanding of both Misha & Ryen's relationship through the years and how it has developed through their letters to each other. It is written in first person from both of their views and it's done really well. We are able to get to know both characters equally well and understand their personalities. I must admit that there was a few times that I began to dislike Ryen, however I realised that that was the author's intent. She isn't meant to be perfect, she is realistically self conscious, scared and desperate for true friendship, but she is also a little broken, brave and full of love. I think that's partly why I enjoyed it so much. The characters were real. Sometimes I didn't like them and not all of them redeemed themselves fully, but I understood them and each of them added to the story in their own way.
I will say though that I did think that the mystery behind Misha's real plight was dragged out a little, however the reveal was a true kicker!
Definitely a YA, but mature enough for older readers to still enjoy if you can get past the highschool cheerleaders. ;)
Lots of steam, great characters along with a strong story with twists - I really enjoyed it.

Penelope Douglas was a first for me!! I actually didn't mine this, and l didn't want to put it down!! Although l was frustrated at times!! Misha and Ryen!! Pen Pals for 7yrs from 5th grade!! Then Misha goes off for 3 months, don't want to say to much don't want to give the story away!! Then Ryen finds something out!! And all breaks loose!! That twist towards the end, had a feeling that was going to unfold!! Loved the ending!!
