5.0 out of 5 starsAnother terrific Reilly read.
Reviewed in Australia on 19 June 2016
Not surprisingly, with Reilly at the helm, this was a cracking good read.
Tons of action, some great lateral thinking by Scarecrow against a very unexpected foe.
I now remember why I re-read a Matthew Reilly book when I need something unusual with the tension and suspense ratcheted up to extreme levels.
Better than a gym visit for a cardio workout and much more satisfying.
I'm off to re-read Seven Ancient Wonders. I need more exercise!

Good, fast paced & exciting. Usual high-octane adventure involving Scarecrow & his motley crew. Scary to think what could be possible.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ein Buch für Sprachschüler und Comic-Leser
Reviewed in Germany on 8 March 2011

Crash Boom Bang.

The F14's guns cannot be fired on the ground by simply pulling a trigger. The Martin-Baker ejection seat automatically releases the seats and parachutes because the pilots are unconscious due to the sudden ejection forces. At least Reilly didn't use magnetic hooks on non-magnetic aluminum this time. All these things he can learn with a tiny amount of research.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just Not Enough
Reviewed in the United States on 17 November 2010

Hell Island returns our favorite hero Scarecrow to action. It's the typical fast-paced, action-packed, implausible romp that we can't get enough of from Matt Reilly. It is very short, and also has some nice illustrations for several scenes. Mr Reilly explains in the foreword that Hell Island was a project undertaken to try to get young people interested in reading books again, hence the simple style and shortness. It is a laudable effort from that perspective; but as an avid reader already, just not quite enough for me. I await the next full-featured Scarecrow adventure.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fast Paced / Incredibly Short Book

Matthew Reilly's books are all highly cartoonish but entertaining outings. This holds true for Hell Island which was originally penned for an Australian government program to get their citizen reading more - thus its very short length. Reilly explains all of this in his introduction but some readers may feel taken advantage of given pricing versus length (the cup of tea you enjoy the book with may last longer). For me, I simply enjoyed the action and the return of Captain Shane "Scarecrow" Schofield - a thinking man's Sergeant Rock or Sergeant Fury.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too short for the money
Reviewed in the United States on 18 April 2013

The story was okay and fast moving, but 122 pages for $6.83, I felt like I got ripped and I like Matthew Reilly. In the future, I will be more careful on how long the book is and not just the good reviews. You just sit down to read this book and it is over. Save your money if you want to read a book more than one day.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is not a book; rather a short story.

Not a bad read but having read this series in total; as well as the Jack West Jr; this book was not to the standards of Matthew Reilly’s previous books. Though I understand why it was made to be a short story; I also feel he may have took some short cuts.
