4.0 out of 5 starsThis book has all of the action, thrills, and danger that I expect from Matthew Reilly.
Reviewed in Australia on 12 October 2019
Welcome back Matthew Reilly! I’m a long time MR fan and love the energy and extreme reality of his action-packed books. The latest book in the Jack West Jr. series is a winner. The big settings, the action, the impossible situations, and the clever escapes and outcomes are signature components of MR’s writing.

Having read all of the previous books in the series, I must mention that the one before this book (The Four Legendary Kingdoms) was my least favourite – It seemed to have ventured into an even more surreal world than that of the other books. MR fans know his books are over-the-top (think of a major motion picture with incredibly complex settings packed with traps, action, explosions, surprises, and extraordinary escapes). When the previous book (4) seemed to have crossed over to another realm I was worried that Jack’s story had passed its best. But, I’m very pleased to say that this new instalment, The Three Secret Cities, has reinvigorated the Jack West Jr. series.

Although it continues on from the ‘four’ book, its settings were grounded in a more real world, which I found easier to relate to and ‘believe’. As usual, the cast of characters was substantial, but even with all of their sub-plots in play, Jack still remained the core focus as he tried to save the world from oblivion. Without revealing anything specific, there were twists that I didn’t expect (nor hoped for) that knocked me for six. But that’s what books do – they draw you in, they engage you, they make you happy, they make you sad, they keep you hooked.

Jack West Jr. is back. This ‘three’ book in the series has all of the action, thrills, danger, complexity, and impossible escapes that I expect from Matthew Reilly. Thanks MR for continuing to share Jack with us.

1.0 out of 5 starsOk not great

Very predictable, an OK read but nothing that strays to far from a well proven formula. Not really fussed to read the follow up.

4.0 out of 5 stars I don't think Matthew understands what a galaxy is

I like Matthew Reilly as an author. The action scenes are ridiculous, but that's ok. That is why I read these books, for the over the top action.

However, even in that mind set I struggle whenever the characters start talking about space and 'galaxies'.

That isn't how they work... It isn't how any of that works.

Still an enjoyable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Read

After a long time waiting, another Jack West book has arrived!!
Not your usual cover to cover action but an excellent read none the less!
Felt like a bit of a bridging story until the final two in the series.
It is a shame that there is quite a gap between stories but still enjoyed it!!
Hope that when the series is finished they will put together a omnibus of all seven??!!

Another MR book with plenty of action and well researched story line.
Ending was frustrating, waiting for next book to see what happens.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another fun explosive read

Matthew Reilly is an author that never fails to deliver with his action packed story lines Yes it is like reading an action movie as you jump from adventure to adventure with the peril ratcheting up as the story progresses

This is another great book in the Jack West Jr. I have loved all of these though the last (The Four Legendary Kingdoms) was a little to out there for me but I am glad to say that he is back to his formula that I absolutely love. After saying that you do need to read the previous book as this one picks up where that one ends In fact do yourself a favour and read all his books

I was given a copy of this book but this is a true and honest review

TOP 10 REVIEWER
4.0 out of 5 stars ‘For three whole days after the Great Games, the Underworld lay silent.’
Reviewed in Australia on 20 January 2019
And then, the action started. The Four Legendary Kingdoms are in turmoil. The world is doomed, unless Jack West Jr and his friends can save it. It’s simple, really, all they must do is find the three ancient weapons in three secret cities, complete a series of ancient puzzles within seven days and the world will be saved. One problem is that he first must identify the location of the three cities, another problem is that quite a few people are after Jack West. They want him dead.

So, what will Jack and his team do? Well, there’s plenty of travel, lots of danger to overcome and some incredible escapes.

This is the fifth book in the Jack West Jr series, and I love the adrenaline-filled action. Pure escapism for me, totally unrealistic but loads of fun. Mostly. I’ve become attached to a few of the characters along the way, and they don’t all make it to the end. Those who do make it seem blessed with superhuman powers: how else could they recover so quickly and fight so effectively?

This is a series where the reading order of the books is important. I’m now looking forward to the next instalment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Reilly - suspend all notions of reality

(spoiler included) If you're buying this book, then I assume you've read all the prior books in the series and know what to expect, which is a lot of crazy, unbelievable and fast moving action scenes. You get all the familiar characters and some other characters from Matthew's other books - The prior book, the four legendary kingdoms, had scarecrow, and now the three cities has Aloysius Knight. There are a few deaths too, which I feel were a bit pointless and doesn't change the storyline much.

My niggle is that the kindle version is £11, but currently you can get the four legendary kingdoms at £0.99! I don't know how Amazon is pricing these books but it feels very overpriced. If you can wait a few weeks, I think the price will come down.

Bring on the next novel, the two....?

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced and action packed

I loved it, you defo have to start at the beginning of the series though to get the full benefit.
3SC was back to the "the whole world is our playground and no where is off limits" style that Matthew Reilly has become known for. Myths and Legends of old are fantastically inter-woven and re-imagined just a little bit to create an epic adventure.
With familiar friends and surprise appearances, this battle against foes old and new is a fast paced action packed adventure.
At points yes it seems to defy the laws of time and physics but really who is here for realism, I'm all for artistic license when it works this well.
**Warning not everyone gets a HEA**

I read these books a long time ago and forgotten how good they were. Now catching up with the new ones. The only downside i have is the stories are becoming a bit repetitive
