4.0 out of 5 starsIf you read the one star reviews don't let them put you off this book
Reviewed in Australia on 21 May 2021
Now, I am a reader of one star reviews before I buy a book so did the same with this one. What I read there nearly put me off so I just wanted to address some of the things that were mentioned in those reviews.
1. If you don't like sex scenes don't read romance novels, this is a story about a woman who hires a male escort so I'm not sure what people were expecting. I know that there are the sweet genre Romance novels out there but I'm pretty sure that you can tell that this is definitely not one of those from the blurb so to criticise it for this is just ridiculous. That being said there was not nearly as much sex in the book as I thought there was going to be, yes there was a bit but it was in line with a lot of romance that I read and I read probably near to 200 books a year.
2. Several people mentioned Fifty Shades of Grey in their reviews which is the thing that actually nearly put me off reading this book. This book is in not related to 50 Shades of Grey in any way shape or form so completely disregard those reviews. If you are like me this is a good thing as in my personal opinion fifty shades is seriously overrated trash. Sorry if that offends anybody.
3. The last thing that more than one reviewer mentioned was about the author not having done her homework about Asperger's. If the reviewers had read about the author they would know that the author has Asperger's and for anyone who does know anything about it knows that it is called a spectrum for a reason. I don't think I need to say anything more about that.
So having gotten my grievances out of the way with the reviews I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it .

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirrky and different

The cover of this book is what first drew me in (not this edition, the teal blue cover). It reminded me of The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, and that is a book that I have read multiple times over the past few years.

I like books that have something a little different, and having characters that are a) a little older and b) on the spectrum lured me in.

What a cute, sweet and wonderful debut novel from Ms Hoang. I was enchanted with this story right from the start.

The Kiss Quotient is a refreshing story, Michael and Stella both have a lot of learning to do when it comes to relationships, and they way they do it made me smile. I felt that we could all relate to Stella in ways, We have all felt out of place, overwhelmed, and all spoken out before our brain has caught up.

Heck, I loved Stella's bluntness! So much talking around things these days, the straight to the point can be a good thing.

I adore Michael and his family. Ms Hoang brought quite of the Vietnamese-ness to the reader, which is something else that I have not come across in my reading, though I am sure there is plenty of it out there.

Beautifully written, lovely storyline, enjoyable characters. This was one that just left me feeling good.

I can't wait to see what Ms Hoang brings us next.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3rd times a treat

I don't really know how to review this Goodreads award winning romance, and I'm mentioning that award because it's the reason I finished the book. I purchased it a few months ago and started it, it didn't grab me or ungrab me I just felt unaffected, in fact I'd say I felt distant. I went on to something else and then had another try picking up where I'd left off, and I still felt the same, yesterday I read that it had been voted romance of the year on Goodreads and thought I'm missing something, there's something about this book that's hooked everyone else and I'm not getting it. So I picked it up and tried again, and I must say the last 25% grabbed me and I had the 'feels'. Maybe the distance feeling is a mirror of the h's autistic traits, maybe the author is really clever? Anyway it's a nice story with a feel good ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars A super enjoyable read!

I am kicking myself for having waited so long to read this book! It is delightful!

This book is so easy to read... You just slide into the story on page one and are promptly swept away on a gentle current of laughter and romantic awesomeness.

The book has a simple premise that is executed beautifully. Filled with loveable characters, real challenges and understandable conflict, it was a super enjoyable read.

The Asperger's elements really hit home for me (as I imagine they would for anyone who is close to an Aspie) and I adored the care and understanding Michael showed Stella even before he knew anything about it. (If only the majority of people in real life were so kind and understanding of people's differences...)

Michael is such a wonderful character... I mean, Stella is fine - I liked her - but Michael stole the show and my heart. The lengths he went to for his family... Not many would. I totally understood why he did the escorting but I'm not going to lie and say that I didn't struggle with it. It gave me a slightly skeezy feeling whenever I thought about how many women he'd slept with. I honestly don't know how Stella could handle it but the pair of them were so good together that I'm glad she could!

I didn't love The Kiss Quotient as much as I did The Bride Test (yes, I read them out of order) but, if you haven't read it already, I highly recommend it just the same!

When I saw this book won Goodreads Choice Award in Romance I looked it up on Amazon but then noticed I had purchased it when it was a freebie. I can't remember why I never read it at the time, I had probably read some negative reviews...

Well I had missed out as I've just finished it and enjoyed it. I liked both Michael and Stella. I found their romance sweet. Michael is not as alpha male as I usually prefer to read but I felt his love for Stella. It was an easy read, I liked the writing style.

My reason for 4 stars not 5 is I felt Stella was too accepting of Michael having being an Escort plus using her real name when she arranged to meet him. Maybe this is down to her autism? The author did state it was a role reversal of Pretty Woman and Richard Gere got over Julia Roberts being a prostitute quite easily so maybe that was the reasoning?!

The storyline is not original but it was a good read. However, looking at the next book I was slightly disappointed to see it features another autistic character, this time the hero. I know the author is autistic but not sure if she needs to make all her characters the same?

I'll start by saying I liked this. Enough to finish it in one sitting. The dynamics and chemistry between the two were perfect, and it was well written, with just enough humour in - I loved Michael's interaction with his family! I wanted to see more of them, in fact; they were fun. The first time she meets them is a gem of a read.
HOWEVER. There were moments when this read as borderline racist. Michael is described early on in the book as looking like Daniel Henney (phwoar) but then later as having 'Western' features. What are 'Western' features, Ms Hoang?? Repeat after me: WE DO NOT ALL LOOK THE SAME (or think the same). Also, credit us with being able to fancy men who are not from the West, will you? We are quite capable of finding say, a full-blooded Vietnamese man attractive, we don't need him to be half Swedish.
Eyes - I have brown eyes, not 'chocolate' or 'coffee'. Food is not an acceptable descriptor for skin tone or eye colour. Michael's eyes are not described this way. If you must do it, write 'her eyes were the colour of milk/dark/90%cocoa-solids chocolate', not 'she had chocolate eyes' (get some different chocolate bars and line them up: they're not all the same colour. There's no chocolate that describes the particular shade of mine, for example). Skin: 'tan' is too vague. Give us specifics - we 'Western' women can actually handle it, you know! You don't need to gloss over a non-White skin off as 'tan' for fear we'll throw your book in the trash!
Aside from that, Michael and his family read a little as stereotypes. So does Stella. Not all those on the spectrum are 'high functioning'. You don't need to 'compensate' for her autism by making her super-brainy. And what about her family? Barely a mention. Barely a hint as to her heritage. Much is made of Michael's, and nothing of hers. Do her family even know she's autistic? (one would think not, given her mother's predilection for seating her with complete strangers at functions). It's almost as if Stella is there so Ms Hoang could write a story about Daniel Henney (but with 'Western' features so it won't put us 'Western' women off reading it).
All in all, good effort and enjoyable read, but watch for those problematic issues, Ms Hoang. The West is just as diverse as the East, thanks.

I need a moment after finishing this. God, I love this book! I love Stella - the protagonist, I love the different POV and how they switch so fluidly, I love Helens Writing style, I love the autistic rep,I love the Vietnamese family & culture, I love the steeaammmminess! *fans self*
This book made me smile so much, also made me nod in appreciation of the raunch, and it totally made me melt.

Hoang has created 2 fantastic characters that compliment each other wonderfully, neither are cliched or stale, they have lots going on for them to make them great 3 dimensional characters that you feel you know.
You’re on their team and you want them both to be happy! Stella isn’t portrayed as over naïve or innocent and dumb to what’s going on, she’s brilliant and funny and horny and strong and kind.
Michael doesn’t come across as a sap or boring. He’s got shit going on and he’s dealing with it, and he’s smart and kind and sexy and protective.

Honestly I could waffle for dayyyyys. But I won’t. I’ll just peer pressure you into reading it and then say ‘told you so’ when you say how much you love it!
I’m so glad a friend recommended this - and super impressed Ellie managed to gently and calmly tell me how good it was, because I’m crushing hard on this book 😭🥰

This one was recommended to me a while ago, I downloaded it and it has been sat on my kindle for months 🤦‍♀️ Just last week, an author I follow mentioned she had read this recently and it was part of a group read! I figured I best get on with it and get it read then lol

I’m glad I did. I liked it. It’s slightly quirky but that makes sense considering what’s going on with Stella. Stella is independent and driven, she is attractive yet clueless and her ability to take life at face value gets her in to trouble on more than one occasion.

Michael is hot. He has a few dense moments and a few lightbulb moments. He’s sweet and funny, kind and generous. He’s great.

I loved the way they worked together and how both characters changed throughout the story, the story is well placed and flows smoothly. A solid four stars ❤

This book ticked so many boxes for things I enjoy in romance stories. The main characters Stella and Michael were both likeable, believable, interesting and flawed. I loved the relationship between them and felt that the pacing and development was spot on.
The story was a brilliant mix of romance, spicy scenes and drama which kept things entertaining and managed to avoid being too fluffy or idealistic which I appreciated.
Sure there were some romance tropes used in the book and a predictability to the plot but I loved following these characters and was swept away by their love story.

Ugh, this book!

First off, I just want to say the Stella and Michael are the absolute cutest. I love them.

The characters are so great and there’s so much depth to them.
Stella has Aspergers and I love the way Hoang has written it so well. The way it’s not a disorder, it’s just part of Stella, it’s what makes her who she is and that’s wonderful!
And then we have Michael. Gorgeous, kind, sweet, sexy, protective Michael ... swoon.
He’s everything you want in a man and his vulnerabilities and lack of self-worth make him so much more endearing along with being so family oriented.

Their relationship is so lovely and the way it grows from being a paid agreement into falling deeply in love with each other is so satisfying and so heartwarming.

Read this book guys. They’re precious!
