TOP 50 REVIEWER
4.0 out of 5 starsAnother excellent Moriarty novel
Reviewed in Australia on 28 September 2021
This one is about a tennis family and as sport isn’t my thing I was dubious at first. However, when the materfamilias disappears and it looks as though the paterfamilias might be responsible and the four very different adult kids plus Detective Khoury and her offsider struggle to figure it out, things become very interesting. Turns out that a young woman claiming to be fleeing domestic violence who ended up living with the mum and dad is more than a bit disturbed. What Moriarty does very well is show how a long marriage can be patches of light and dark and she’s particularly good at demonstrating inter generational trauma and its effects. There are also some good chuckle moments, like the receptionist eavesdropping on a phone conversation because her hearing is very good, “which was not her fault “. Like other authors now, care is taken to present characters from a variety of ethnic backgrounds as well, which is refreshing. I’d have to re-read the previous books to see if this is true, but my feeling is that this one is sharper-edged than her previous work. There’s a lot of astute observation of the human condition here. Enjoyed it a lot.

1.0 out of 5 starsCan be bothered finishing ...
Reviewed in Australia on 16 October 2021
I wish I had remembered how disappointed I was by Nine Perfect Strangers.

This is the extremely tedious story of a family of unlikeable people where the mother disappears.
I can't finish it because I really don't care what happened to her.
I tried to get interested and skipped ahead to see if it got better.
I have always finished books - even ones I don't like - until now.

I just could not get into this book for some reason it fell short of the hype published before it was released

2.0 out of 5 stars Hard work

This latest book from Liane Moriarty was laborious reading and I only continued to the end because up until now I have LOVED her work. It jumped all about but, call me silly, but the 2 sons names in the story really annoyed me Logan and Troy. I felt Logan name suited Troy's personality better and vis aversa.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not her best by a long way

Have read most of Liane Moriaty's books, and this felt a long way from the tight and great story flow of others. Perhaps not fair when I've just read 2 Trent Dalton's, so perhaps enjoyable as a light holiday read with little substance.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just okay
Reviewed in Australia on 3 October 2021
I've read all of Liane Moriarty's books & I would have to say that this was my least favourite. It just dragged on & I struggled to keep reading at times. But I wanted to find out what happened at the end so I persisted & it did get a bit better, although the very end was disappointing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for me

The problem with this book for me is that I couldn't invest in any of the characters and that left me not really caring about what happens to them. I've put it aside for now and will try again in a few weeks.

2.0 out of 5 stars So not worth the wait

I had anxiously been awaiting the release of this book. It was one of the most boring, anticlimactic nook of hers. It was like someone else wrote it. I struggled to make it through the ridiculous plot. I would have given it only one star, but tennis was a central theme in the book, so I gave it two stars. I do not recommend unless you are an insomniac and need help falling asleep.

I usually like this author’s books but this one was exceedingly dull, excessively long and far too much time spent on character development rather than the actual plot. I gave up after 100 pages.

I am a huge Liane Moriarty fan, but this book is just plain dull. I didn’t care about any of the characters, the story had no flow and it was a massive chore to finish; too many tennis puns and the Covid part at the end was just odd. Such a shame as I was really looking forward to this new release.

Haven't enjoyed this at all. The worst LM book I have ever read. I am skipping pages just to get to the end, but already know I am going to be disappointed by that too! I even found a spelling mistake.

2.0 out of 5 stars least favorite of all liane moriarty’s books

The book was written in a way to try and keep you engaged and loads of sub plots were created to try and make you believe a certain plot just for the ‘twist’ at the end but I found it disappointing and boring overall
