I never get tired of watching this, Contains 2 great songs , the ballad of 'Barry and Freda' , and 'Things would never have worked' , great fun picking the famous people in the audience, The 'additional extra' old interviews are fascinating, in that they show, what I imagine is a more natural Victoria Wood, The interviews Ms Wood did in the later part of her career seem scripted and rehearsed.
This was made for ITV and has got to be one of the most funny Victoria Wood dvds ever! A star-studded audience who are genuinely filled with tears of laughter at Victoria Wood's clever gags and observations of working class British lives. Have you ever seen her friend Kimberley? Did you know that she got startled by someone poking an eclair through the curtain? Have you ever wondered what it's like to be married to Lenny Henry? And I bet you know all the words to 'Freda and Barry' Sadly Victoria is no longer with us and that hurts. This dvd is just one example of what a massive talent she was and how much we miss her.
If you've only just discovered Victoria Wood then this is the one standup performance of hers you need to see first. Of course, her other live dvds such as At the Albert Hall and Live 1997 are just as brilliant, but there's just something about this An Audience With performance from 1988 which makes it such an iconic stand up performance. I heard somewhere that Wood was quite nervous filming this as she could see everyone's faces in the audience, compared to standing on a dark stage in a theatre. If this is true though, her nervousness meant she delivered one of her best performances ever, and the audience throughout the show are in complete fits.
What I also like about this An Audience With is that there isn't too much focuss on all the celebrities in the audience. Wood answers a few questions at the start of the show, but the rest of the show is just her and a piano, of which Barry and Freda is performed at the end of the show, reducing the audience into a complete state of delirium by then.
There's also some great character monologues such as a woman trying to get volunteers in a department store to try out some new cosmetics: "Maroon is back with a right vengance this season. Eyes are popping out whilst lips are receeding",
The market research woman, "I do look rather startled don't I. My I.D picture was taken in a photo booth and someone had just poked an eclair through the curtain".
And of course the geek in the orange beret always looking for her friend Kimberley, "Red cabbage, how much!!".
The four bonus interviews are also a nice addition to the dvd. Now please release Sold Out and Live In Your Own Home on dvd before my videos wear out completely.
This really WAS a fabulous 'audience with ' , Victoria really showed them all how it should be done, I did see this when it was originally televised in 1988 hilarious she practically had the celeb audience on the floor with laughter (she had a few in tears with it Sarah Kennedy especially ).The ballad of Barry and Freda brilliant they should release a CD of the song the most up to date version and the original, you'll be missed loads Victoria R.I.P.
Soooo funny an audience with Victoria Wood has all the comic genius we've come to know and love including some stars who are no longer here due to the age of it but as with all her comedy they stand the test of time
Loved this when it was first aired; still hilarious now. From Kimberly's friend to the Sasherelle saleswoman to the divine 'Ballad of Barry and Freda', Wood packs in the laughs. As she always did - her incisive but ultimately kind-hearted wit will be greatly missed. RIP.
Victoria wood is a very funny lady and if you are a fan you will enjoy this DVD. I think that one of the best bits is where she is talking about 'her friend' - if you have a sense of humour this will have you in stitches! Enjoy!
