Ooops!!! It's Cavaradossi time , not Tosca's...

Despite the title this production's real name should be "Mario Cavaradossi" and not "Tosca". Actually it was focused more on Jonas Kaufmann playing Cavaradossi rather than on Tosca played by Emily Magee. Or is it that the great personality of the german tenor outshone the soprano? The bariton Thomas Hampson has the right sleaziness in portraing the evil Scarpia, but maybe lacks a bit of "volume" compared to the dark and masculin voice of his rival Cavaradossi.
The direction concept is not that imaginative with its moving forward to the 50's, but the costumes are quite appropriate.
Paolo Carignani conducts smoothly , but a little bit more of "elan" would have improved the final result.

Tosca has to be my favourite Opera of all so I am always keen to see any new production. For me it epitomises high drama with music. Of course the high drama and music were there but I think, even aside from the update to the 1950's, the production by Robert Carsen took far too many liberties. Several things just dont ring true. The constant reference to Napoleon are ,for me, important to the pacing of the story. Almost a century and a half later would intelligence forces be so poorly informed about political shifts? Would cannons be fired from battlements? Would prisoners still be housed in an ageing castle and still shot at dawn by a firing squad. To make this all plausible you would have to re write the complete story which could be possible. Think about what Bernstein did with West Side Story. Returning to the Opera on the whole. The tremendously powerful finale to Act 1 lost all its religous pomp and ceremony and was reduced to some kind of press conference that just didnt work. The whole concept of Tosca the diva was centred around the famous divas who portrayed the character in such brilliance throughout the 50's and 60's so you get the idea that Tosca is only acting and none of it actually takes place. I am still mystified what was supposed to happen at the end? The music stands alone in showing us Toscas suicide. There was a novelty element that the designer wanted to make a statement and tribute to Callas but at the opera goers expense. Within these bounds the acting and singing were superb. For once both the male characters were portrayed as vibrant and virile characters with the bad guy possibly being more attractive than the good guy - Hampson was superb as Scarpia and actually very believable as a maffia boss. Kaufmann as Cavaradossi was a little to wide eyed and far to easily dominated by Scarpia not showing enough determined fight. I particularly enjoyed the lead up to the assasination of Scarpia with the removal of the gown and Tosca waiting in her under garments but would she really have lay on the floor and not on something more provocative. I was also confused about the paintings in the first and second acts.How did Cavaradossi manage to repiant and finish it? I suppose we have to accept that to hardened opera goers productions must come up with something new and interesting. Sadly this one lost the plot!!!

This is a Tosca worth having Jonas Kaufmann is excellent as Cavaradossi and Emily Magee in a brilliant portrayal as the jealous Floria Tosca. A more modern production, but it does not distract from the storyline. The highlight however is Thomas Hampson as Scarpia. Brooding, evil and downright frightning!!Great singing, great acting.

Très belle interprétation de Tosca au point de vue musical; malheureusement dans une mise en scène ridicule qui n'a rien à voir avec le livret de cet opéra en tout cas pour ce qui est du 1er acte sensé se dérouler dans une église et qui est la représenté dans une salle de concert?

J'adhère totalement aux propos du commentateur précédent. Callas a tellement marqué ce rôle que je ne peux entendre "Quanto?... Il prezzo" ou "Davanti a lui tremava tutta Roma" sans y superposer la raucité de la voix de la diva grecque dans ces répliques. Cette Tosca-ci n'est pas assez excessive dans ses sentiments et son comportement pour qu'on y croie vraiment. Hampson en Scarpia est un peu trop homme du monde. Il voudrait être méchant mais n'y parvient pas. Il n'est ni assez vil ni assez veule pour convaincre. Vocalement ce qu'il fait est beau quoique un peu lent et donne un peu l'impression qu'il s'écoute sans vraiment vivre son personnage. Dommage car avec un engagement physique plus total il serait plus crédible. Reste Kaufmann qui chante superbement avec des pianissimi extraordinaires et des fortissimi non moins prenants. Lui est dans son personnage. Il y est et on y croit. Il est vraiment peintre (les metteurs en scène devraient demander aux peintres comment on tient une palette!!! soit dit au passage... sur l'avant-bras, pas sur la main!). Il aime Tosca. Il est patriote et engagé puisqu'il abrite un évadé politique. Il souffre sous la torture et surtout, surtout il nous dit, quand il est dans la prison du château Saint-Ange, à l'aube de son dernier matin, qu'il n'a jamais tant aimé la vie et il nous le chante avec des acents déchirants. Ce dvd vaut la peine d'être acquis et pour lui et pour une mise en scène dont le commentateur précédent explique très bien la progression dramatique.

Tosca est un des opéras les plus célèbres et les plus joués de par le monde. Et, qu'on le veuille ou non, il reste définitivement attaché à la prestation de Maria Callas. Aucune autre cantatrice n'a réussi à imposer le personnage d'une façon aussi profonde. Et ce n'est pas Emily Magee qui viendra la détrôner!
Mais cette nouvelle production de Zurich est surtout l'occasion de témoigner de l'intelligence de Robert Carsen qui tente et réussit une approche différente de ce mélodrame en faisant de l'héroïne une diva obsédée par son image qui se croit toujours en représentation, face à son amant comme face à son bourreau.
De ce point de vue, le Cavaradossi de Jonas Kaufmann ne peut que faire valoir son chant (superbe) au détriment d'une personnalité autre que dépendante de sa maîtresse. De même, le style très aristocratique du superbe Scarpia de Thomas Hampson se complet dans l'admiration et ne cède au sadisme qu'en dernier recours.
Dépassée par une situation qu'elle ne peut plus contrôler, Tosca perd son public (Mario et Scarpia) et n'a plus que le suicide pour finir en tragédienne.
Avec la complicité du décorateur (Anthony Ward), Carsen commence par la splendeur d'une église-théâtre (1er acte) pour nous enfermer dans une pièce bunkerisée (acte 2) et finalement nous projeter dans le vide de l'acte 3.
Comme dirait Paillasse : "La commedia è finita!".

Der Einzige, der mich in dieser nicht immer schlüssigen Inszenierung des Theaters im Theater von Anfang an restlos überzeugt, ist Thomas Hampson als hervorragend singender und darstellerisch faszinierender Scarpia: Ein attraktiver, eleganter Machtmensch, der alle Facetten seiner Rolle von zynischer Freude bis zu hochfahrender Brutalität zeigt - er erinnert mich hier an Raimondi, bei dem sich damals auch Scharen von Frauen gefragt haben, warum sich Tosca bei diesem hinreißenden Mannsbild so anstellt ;-)
Der 2. Akt erfährt vor allem in der unglaublich packenden Schluss-Szene seine Dynamik vorwiegend durch Hampsons großartige Interpretation.
Jonas Kaufmann mag ich sehr ( sein Don José ist unübertroffen, sein Werther wunderbar und sein Münchner Cavaradossi 2010 hat mir besser gefallen als dieser ), aber er übertreibt m. E. besonders im 1. Akt den Einsatz seiner gehauchten "pianissimi", statt mit mehr der Situation und dem Operntext angepasster Leidenschaft zu singen und spielt einen ziemlich oberflächlichen Lover, dessen hektische, flüchtige Zärtlichkeiten nicht etwa die Liebe zu Tosca demonstrieren, sondern eher einen unverbindlichen Flirt mit dieser ach so lästigen Diva. Schon der räumliche Abstand zwischen den beiden, während sie die liebevollsten Worte singen, wirkt befremdlich ( Regie ?! ). Erst im 2. und 3. Akt berührt Kaufmann wirklich.
Emily Magee singt sehr gut ( die Rolle liegt ihrer Stimme viel besser als Wagners Elsa und Eva ) und spielt eine temperamentvolle Tosca von der koketten, zickigen, gefeierten Künstlerin bis zur hochdramatischen Leidenden.
Zu Bühnenbild und Regie möchte ich sagen, dass mir die selten gelingende "Modernisierung" gerade von Werken des Verismo nicht einleuchtet. Die Oper Tosca spielt am 14. Juni 1800 ( Schlacht von Marengo ) in Rom und bekommt politisch und gesellschaftlich ihren Hintergrund durch Napoleon. Auch die Schauplätze sind vorgegeben: Es macht einfach keinen Sinn, wenn Cavaradossi die ( heilige ! ) Maddalena an eine leere Theaterwand malt, Scarpia das "aqua benedetta" für Tosca mangels Weihwasserkessel aus dem Handschuh zaubert und Tosca in den Orchestergraben in den Tod springt. Aber auch mit Kirchen und Palazzi haben wir heutzutage kein Glück: Man sehe sich nur das extrem hässliche, für Italien vollkommen untypische Backstein-Gebäude und die Scheußlichkeit von Scarpias Bahnhofshalle hier in München an - "mitteleuropäisches Regietheater" gilt inzwischen als Schimpfwort !
Gegen diesen Frust empfehle ich die DVD von der Met 1985 ( das schönste mir bekannte Tosca-Bühnenbild und eine bis in die kleinste Handbewegung ausgefeilte Regie von Zeffirelli mit Behrens, Domingo, MacNeil und Sinopoli )... aber die haben Sie sicher schon längst !

Da zu der Zeit gerade Tosca-süchtig, mußte es natürlich auch die Züricher Inszenierung sein. Das schlichtere Ambiente gefiel mir zwar besser, die Insz. war gewöhnungsbedürftig und der Cavaradossi natürlich immer, aber bei mir muss inzwischen halt Terfel der Scarpia sein (seit der Festspiele in München 12), auch wenn Hampson auch sehr stark war. Die Besetzung der Tosca war dann auch eher nicht so ganz mein Fall. Werde diese DVD wohl eher verschenken, denn wenn, schaue ich doch immer nur die Aufnahme aus London an.

Oeuvre vériste par excellence Tosca demeure un des plus beaux opéras du compositeur. La distribution est à la hauteur du drame lyrique. Le rôle de Scarpia tenu par Thomas Hampson brille tant sur le plan vocal que scénique. Tosca est bien interprétée mais c'est Jonas Kaufmann qui campe un Caravadossi idéal et très réussi.La mise en scène est judicieuse parfois surprenante. En revanche, je regrette que la caméra placée côté jardin ait filmé quasiment tout l'opéra en diagonale.
