G. E. Melone
5.0 out of 5 starsSCOTTISH HISTORY WITH SOME FLAIR
Reviewed in Australia on 13 May 2016
I could not put this book down! I loved the characters, the sense of place, the outrageously impossible premise and the series of events that unfolded as I took rather large size bites out of this enormously long book. Pages literally flew by- thank goodness for Kindle or I would have had carpel tunnel syndrome by the end.

This is a tale that has so many enticing aspects: history, romance, adventure, a little bit of violence and a lot of sex. [Having also seen Series 1 of the excellent tv series, I now understand what they mean by it being a bodess ripper]. I don't normally read books like this, but a friend told me about them and I was intrigued by the time travel aspect. And then, like the proverbial first drag on a ciggie, or puff on a joint or sip of some whiskey, I was addicted. I even found myself researching the times and the Jacobite uprising and the clans. I can see why there are clubs that swoon over Scottish history.
I also highly recommend the TV series, which is pretty faithful to the books. If you decide to take on Ms Gabaldon's Outlander series -where does she find the time to wash up or cook tea?- settle in for a long engagement. It takes true commitment, but so far well worth it.

I found this book disturbing as there was a lot of fixation on violent sex and violent punishment in general - seemed to be the over-riding theme. Also felt there was a lot of waffle. If you don't like this sort of thing, I would avoid this book.

Yes, I read with intrigue and the dialogue is in keeping with the performance in the serials taking us into the 1700's Bonny Scotland, the Clans and the Jacobite rising where sorcery and witchcraft is exchanged by Clare's knowledge in Medicinal potions and medical practices from the 20th century and love reading how the mysteries unfold from this era.... the romantic interludes between Clare and Jamie, and how the Clans fight and try to protect their rights in brutal battles and slaughters maintaining their masterful and heroic stature for their beloved land, Scotland.

Wow, just wow. As someone who has never read anything slightly historical i was a little worried going in but i was curious. This blew my mind in so many ways.
Its passionate, original, and engaging. It leaves you wanting more and even after reading the 800 odd pages i had not had enough. I havent seen the show but might look into it now.
Jamie, Jamie, Jamie. What can i say. "Sassenach" is used so often and yet so kindly from his mouth. He is strong, grounded and truly a great character, he is pretty darn near perfect.
Claire is strong willed, determined and she adapts so well. I liked her character a lot, her voice didnt annoy me and i think her reactions and way of coping were brilliantly written.
I look forward to continuing on with this series.

Love the books as much as the tv series. There are several changes in the series to the books but nothing to spoil a good read from start to finish. BUT you can’t stop at book one, so sit back with a cuppa & lose yourself & enjoy.

The historical content is interesting and the concept of time travel fascinating. Then there is the romance between two independent people which flourishes through many adverse situations.

Gabaldon writes in the first person for Claire and uses much historical reference to actual events which I found fascinating being a fan of the genre. The writing is descriptive and compelling - often starting with the end scenario and then going back over the details that led to the event. Claire's romance with Jamie is sublime and I must admit 'The Wedding' chapter is singularly one of the most romantic I have ever read and was extremely well interpreted in the TV series (if not improved upon). I am currently reading the other books in the series and enjoying the deep delving into the Jacobite revolution and the slave trading of the era. I have seen others compare this to Ken Follets 'Pillars of the Earth' and they are correct with the comparison of lives constantly beset by tragedies. It also has a similarity to 'Fire and Ice' except we're only following the two main characters as they roam the countryside of the north and not the GOT cast of thousands.

4.0 out of 5 stars Time travel - spicy, violent, intriguing

A very long book, and at times I just wanted the author to get on with the story, but an engaging tale about time travel and life in the Scottish highlands 200 years ago. Violent, passionate, it has a lot of elements to the story - although it tended to get unbelievable towards the end.
Looking forward to reading the next instalment.

Loved it. Saw the TV series first and I really enjoyed the historical information, the chemistry between the two lead characters and the story line. Have now started reading the series of books, which like others, I find quite addictive. I will need to finish them all so that I can get on with the rest of my life. The TV series is quite consistent with the books and also makes for addictive viewing.

I read this after watching the series.
The book has so much more detail which was to be expected.
I thoroughly enjoyed the familiar as well as the new (To me) parts of the story.
Looking forward to the next in the series
