How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

I read this on the strength of another book of his and because I was about to go to Rome. Not enough about Rome, disjointed with two voices and rather trivial. Was disappointd.

2.0 out of 5 stars It got published because Anthony Doerr was already known.

I ordered this book because I read All the light we cannot see, and that was honestly a magnificent work of fiction. I wanted to read more of Doerr so I ordered this book Four Seasons in Rome. Now, it is a travelogue, no story, no plot, just a lot of street names and an excessive account of being a new father to twins. The only thing good about reading this book is learning that Anthony Doerr was not a good writer from his birth, that he improved with time, and the ten years he took to write All the light we cannot see is inspiration to all young writers to put in the work and succeed.

Definately not what I was expecting having read another of Anthony Doerr's books. It was beautifully descriptive of Rome and really made me feel like I was there. A deep and meaningful piece of writing about his life rather than an actual story. So true a description of the first year of life with twins. I enjoyed it on many levels.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment

By turns prosaic and overly rhapsodic, this book lost me in the first chapter. As a resident of Rome I'm disposed to love paeans to the city. But I could not love Doerr's choices for style and content.

2.0 out of 5 stars lethargic

I loved his fiction "all the Light We cannot See", and I have been to Rome and will visit again this fall, which is the reason why I picked this book. I am afraid that I was rather disappointed, I find this book surprisingly lethargic. ( I never thought it would be possible. when you are writing about Rome of all places) Maybe because he was sleep deprived... I don't know, but there is not much charm or flavor, or energy, even when he writes about intriguing aspects of Romans and city life or incredible art history of Rome, and again, how can this possible?

2.0 out of 5 stars If you want to read about Rome, consider something else.

This books is about a melancholy, anxious guy who became a parent for the first time and had twins. It’s really not about Rome. Unless you think Rome is tragic, depressing and a little creepy. I did learne about 3 places I wanted to see there so I gave it 2 stars. Wish I didn’t slog through the whole book for that knowledge!

After the praise I heard for this writer this book was a real let down. Sorry I spent the money on this, diary of his lack luster stay in Italy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Seems like a potboiler

Seems like a potboiler. Amazing ignorance of Rome and inaccurate descriptions of Roman places, especially what is near what. Love his other books. But not this one. This is about having twins, not about Rome.

2.0 out of 5 stars Made me want to visit Rome again but that's about it

Thankfully a quick read. I liked the author's writing but the book seemed like it was a travel book on Rome or a parenting book but didn't really succeed at either for me. He mentions many Roman sites but if I hadn't been there before I'd have learned little about them. He often talks about the beauty of Rome during to its long history but I found it hard to quite grasp exactly why he was so smitten by it. And as another device I really mentioned, one learns virtually nothing about his wife. Overall I'm left confused about the intent of the book.
