Michael J. Lee
4.0 out of 5 stars 50th anniversary edition of a classic film about the search for racial justice in America

This is a highly successful adaption of Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning classic novel of modern American literature. The soundtrack by Elmer Bernstein, one of the greatest of all film music composers, is beautiful and profoundly evocative. The book and film capture, with great artistic integrity, the fraught atmosphere of a nation in economic depression and sitting on a volcano of racial prejudice. Gregory Peck, one of my favourite actors, deservedly won an Academy Award for his understated portrayal of idealistic, quietly dignified and principled attorney, Atticus Finch. Brock Peters was all sincerity and humanity as the fateful victim of social prejudice in his role as Tom Robinson, while James Anderson is menacing as an unrepentant and violent racist, Bob E. Lee Ewell. A superbly atmospheric and honest social and human drama.

Bought this DVD because we were reading the book with our book group since it was the 50th anniversary of publication (2010) and it had been a while since I'd watched this movie. It really is a classic and it is adapted very well from the book and is suitable for viewers of all ages, especially since it is mainly told from the childrens point of view. The only thing that I found off-putting - and is the same in all these old movies - is the annoying high-pitched squeakiness of the child actors. You notice this a lot in other films of this era like It's a Wonderful Life, and it grates on me. So one star off as it did spoil my enjoyment of the movie but only because I'd forgotten it would be like this and I'm pretty sure the first time I saw this film I never noticed at all but being so used to the voices in modern films it really put me off.

quality, quality film. gregory peck leads the cast through a trial of a black man who has been accused of raping a white women in 1930s alabama. just as the book does, the film version deals with racism long before the civil rights movement. peck excells in the lead role as he leads his client and children through the ordeal. the adaption of harper lee's novel is beautifully shot and won many awards including the american film institute's greatest hero in the 20th century award. if you haven't seen it, you really are missing something.

I bought this DVD to help my daughter with her GCSE English.

She found this DVD helped her to understand the book better, as the book is difficult to read due to the southern accents.

It helped her put a face to what she was reading she ended up with an A*

I would definatley recommed this DVD

This was a gift for my 96 year old mother who had read the book, but missed seeing the film.
She was delighted to find there were sub titles and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The dvd The book was rather indepth in characterisations the dvd failed to explore , in depth , the social itergrenci es of the sleepy community.the childhood jem scout and dill was lost in the film exceptional for a few snatches which had not sequential co text. The neighbous the hidden friendship the community support for those with biitter tounged and all evenn
And scant regrd tO BOO a strong element in the book
Quality dvd and apart from the above a small investment to give visualisation to a classic text

How can you knock a film starring Gregory Peck and written by Pulitzer Prize winner Harper Lee? I think the only book she ever wrote. But who needs another one when you can write like this? The accompanying dvd showing an interview with Peck is also very good.

4.0 out of 5 stars A classic

This is a classic and should be watched by all - it closely follows the book by Harper Lee - though it is rather mute over the rape that occurs so that it can be a family classic. A great story for children to learn about right in a confused 50s US.

Good, but rather disappointed with the sound quality, kids too high pitched and adults a bit mumbly, Don't think the film did full justice to the book which I thoroughly enjoyed.Hence four stars.
