3.0 out of 5 starsAnother reasonable read.
Reviewed in Australia on 10 June 2020
This book I'd classify as a light reading exercise, not one that requires a deal of mental effort. It is, to me, reasonably sound in its plot lines. What I find difficult are the thoughts that many of the characters have. Those thoughts seem to be rather shallow and repetitious. Having said these things, though, I'll readily admit that it is far superior to any work of fiction I could put together. My star rating is on how I compare this effort to all the other books I've written reviews about. Recommended as light reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Police Procedural series

This is the third book in the DS Jack MacKinnon series by DS Butler and the more I read of this series the more I enjoy it

Detective Jack Mackinnon’s career is in serious trouble. Still in the Detective Chief Inspector’s bad books and excluded from the Major Investigation team, Mackinnon is assigned the case nobody wants. As Mackinnon investigates, he discovers a horrifying link to a crime committed a decade ago.

This is a good police procedural series with characters that are growing on me. In this book Jack is hunting down suspected contaminated drugs that are killing people. Is it by accident or is this a deadly revenge.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good story, but...

I've enjoyed reading these stories except for the use of God's name in vain. Most people think His name is God, but that's His title. His name is Jesus and this author uses it quite a bit.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just ok for me

It was ok. About right for a car trip or train ride. This is book three and the first that I'd read, so perhaps I needed to have more backstory to understand the characters' personal behavior. He seemed somewhat wimpy half of the time. Not bad, just not really engaging for me. So I'll probably skip the remainder of the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good (but not great) Book

I liked this book. There were parts where it dragged a little but the final third was good. The author has a way with the characters. All of the characters in the story are fully developed people. That's the best part of the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful world of addiction
Reviewed in the United States on 18 July 2013

This is nominally a DS Jack Mackinnon book but the real heroines and villains are several females.

During my long life I did not become addicted to any substance and none of my friends did either. So, this, to me, was like a visiting another planet with different ways of life (mostly death, actually).

The author uses too many UK specific abbreviations and words not explained in the text and not known to the embedded dictionary of US English. One just has to surmise that DS is Detective Sergeant, DC Detective Constable and so on. Also registrar in a hospital is (most likely) our resident. Ms. Butler obviously did not have the US market in her mind market while writing this book. Jeffrey Archer, for instance, usually knows and avoids too many British specific words and all abbreviations.

Three stars, somewhat recommended. Should I check other books from the series? Perhaps.
