Now this film doesn't so much fail the 'bechdel test', so much as throw a burnt bra at modern feminism. The general story is one of a working class woman's journey from 15 to 27, mainly involving her devoted love to a very rich guy (wyn). It's based on a controversial (for it's time)book, and is apparently romanticised in comparison. The cast are superb. One of the reasons you don't want to wring wyn's neck is due to dennis morgan's (absolutely gorgeous !) lovely performance. The film, however, is all the way miss roger's. She is in almost every scene, and is beyond oscar worthy. Her eyes say as much about how kitty is feeling as the script does. If you love golden age cinema, and can enjoy a rather sexist guilty pleasure every now and again, you'll love it.
i cant believe i found this film. i watched a few years ago on tv and i love the story and the capturing of ordinary life in the thirties for a single girl. it really is an emotional film. beautiful costume. (cant get over the little boys leather gloves!!!) thats near the end of the film. it also an insite on true love. if somebody loves you they will marry you. thats the bottom line in my opinion. hey its a movie.. highly recommend. chick flick of the thirties!!!!!!!
Films this old shouldn't be this good, but compared with the latest rubbish from the USA this one is subtle, intelligent. witty. moving and sublime. I love you Ginger Rodgers = loved you with that dancing beanpole Astaire (the best dancer nevertheless). They way you appeared to respond to every move, gesture, word - I was jealous let me tell you. But I rise above this and love you nevertheless. Damn, I wish I didn't have three left feet and could dance like Fred did.
Kitty Foyle was the only Oscar win for Ginger Rogers, why, I'll never know as she was a fine actress and starred in a good few worth the same accolade. Going back to Kitty Foyle. It is a delight to see this versatile actress go from joy to real misery, then back again. She dominated the screen with her meltingly lovely face, wonder figure and acting abilities. Biased? Yes I am, but with good reason. This is a movie to enjoy with all of the ups and downs of a girl who wants to be loved, only falls for the wrong guy.
