5.0 out of 5 stars Simply: GREAT TELEVISION!

It is annoying when people choose to solely focus on the similarities between 'Wentworth Prison' and 'Orange is the New Black' - ignoring the many [and majority] differences. Also, it grates when ignoramouses discard Wentworth as simply a 'Prisoner Cell Block H' unescssary & crappy remake.

If these ill informed people were to watch Wentworth they'd see that Prisoner charcters have been reimagined, there plenty of new charcters, and the rhythm of the show is completely diffent to Orange - due to decisions made by the writers and producers and the show being set and filmed in Australia (where some of the best Ozzie, and Kiwi, talent has been mined and utilised to great affect).

Hard hitting from the get go, emotionally gripping, with the necessary light relief from the character's friendships and some wonderful comic turns.

Stop comparing and writing off this excellent show, and let Wentworth challenge as it does entertain.

5.0 out of 5 stars and that is the best way to watch and enjoy these absolute belters

First off and foremost, to all true old and new prisoner fans, obviously from a purests point of view the original series from 1979/1986 will never be surpassed, the mold was definately broken, i caught them on the re-runs shown in england a year after australia finished the final series to concentrate on 'Neighbours' which was going into its 2nd season at the old Nunawading studios in victoria/australia. However....i gave the new modern version a try via T.V. last year and seperated my thoughts of the original so as not to compare the two, and that is the best way to watch and enjoy these absolute belters. A more grittier, realistic portrayal of a moderrn-day prison, with characters and names revamped with different personalities for example, (meg-circa-79/86 was empathic, understanding) (meg-circa-2013/14 a more hardened no nonsense type). With the modern series from what i can gather they are condensing 8yrs of original-style story-lines and condensing old and new characters into maybe 3 series depending how well they take off, firstly in our ozzy cousins home-land then world-wide, which the first series most definitely has. I suggest any prisoner fan give these a whirl, you won't be disappointed, and although in comparrison with the old set, the new one appears smaller and more cramped with less locations, this may change as the series expands. Remember, even though i myself arn't a fan of change, in this instance 'with time comes change' is a good approach for grity T.V. viewing here. Check out youtube to see some of the original cast checking out the new set, the 2 bea smiths chatting together comparing notes, checking out the new laundry etc, and basically passing the batton onto the 'new era', the original 'Mrs Davidson' looks and sounds exactly the same....amazing....enjoy....

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for Season 2 and 3.... A must watch for fans of "Bad Girls"!

I never watched the original "Prisoner: Cell Block H" which is what this Drama is based on. It is, as the name says, set in "Wentworth Prison" in "Block H" and I believe the characters are loosely based on the originals, but that is as much as a comparison as I can say. However, I do tend to love Prison Dramas; I'm a fan of Oz, Prison Break and Bad Girls, and now the Aussie "Wentworth Prison" can be added to that list.

If you enjoyed Shed's "Bad Girls" on ITV back around 1999-2005, particularly the first few seasons before it got a bit too soapy, then you will definitely enjoy this. This is very violent, gritty and bloody - but at the same time compelling. And it grabs the atmosphere within 5 minutes of the first episode. Without giving away too many spoilers, Danielle Cormack's character - Bea Smith - arrives at Wentworth Prison on Remand for the Attempted Murder of her husband, quickly she finds herself caught between a "Top Dog" rivalry and turf war between the young, angry "Franky" Doyle (Nicole de Silva) and the middle aged but brutal and callous mob wife, Jacs (Kris McQuade) and learns the hard way about prison life and must learn how to survive and hold on to her sanity.

The 10 episode serial goes through a range of gripping plots and turns and ends with quite a brilliant finale. At the time of writing this review a second and third Seasons have been commissioned, and the second is being shot. All I can say is, I can't wait!

I am old enough to remember the original Cell Block H, though my memories of it have faded with time. I always found it to be a bit corny, with ropey acting and sets and about as shocking as Mr Blobby. I then heard about this reboot (to use the proper terminology) and was very keen to see it, though I missed most of the episodes on Channel 5 when it finally came out. I then bought the DVD box-set and, boy, am I glad. What a series! Anyone who is expecting this show to be a carbon copy of Cell Block H will be very disappointed. The acting and production is far superior to the old show and, though it features several key characters of the original show, their new personalities are completely different. This really is riveting stuff and I was hooked throughout every episode. I also noticed that some reviews complained about the sex scenes and language, but they must have known that this carries an 18 certificate, so what were they expecting? I did not find the sex scenes or language any more shocking or graphic than any other 18-rated show or film. Anyway, I enjoyed this series and I was very depressed when the final episode was over. This is the best TV drama that I have seen in a long time and it has left me hungry for more. Bring on Series 2 soon! Compelling, superb and thoroughly addictive show. Buy it, you won't regret it!

i wanted to see this show because i found a lot of videos on the frankie/erica relationship on youtube and they got me hooked, so i wanted to see if there was more of this in the series. i wasn't expecting what i finally got to see. i don't know the original show, but there's no need to, because this show is amazing as it is. yesterday i got the dvds and i've already seen all 10 episodes, some of them twice. it's been a while since i've seen such compelling storytelling in a tv show, and the acting is just over the top, finest acting on tv that i've seen for the last couple of years. although i started watching wentworth because of franky and erica, it's bea's story that makes it so hard to wait for the second season, in which leeanna walsman will probably not even play. bea is the coolest character on tv that i've seen for a very long time. and danielle cormack' portraying of her is acting craft that has reached perfection. i buy every second of it. and i'm spoiled with good acting, so i know what i'm talking about.

i can just say, if you want to see breathtaking, amamzingly well written, rough, tough, emotional, heartbreaking drama with strong, extraordinary female characters, this is it. it can't get any better than this! i hope season two will be as strong, because with the cliffhangers at the end of season one there is a lot the writers can build on. it's just such a pitty that it takes so long for the dvds to get published, i live in germany and here there is no other way to watch the show.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Amazing , My Favourite TV Show Of All Time :)

This show is simply amazing , it has gripped me from the moment it started , such a great storyline portrayed so well by all the cast and so well written and planned by the producers and directors and rest of the crew.

The stories that run through every episode of every season are fantastic , gripping and leave you on the edge of your seat , and always leaves you eager to find out what's going to happen next.

Danielle Cormack is a very talented actress who's portrayal of Bea Smith from the very first episode and onwards is incredible , the viewers definitely go on a very good journey with her character.
Nicole Da Silva plays Franky Doyle and again such a talented actress who plays her part so very well from the woman no one really wants to mess with to a softer side where the audience start to really understand her and feel for her.

The main focus throughout this show is Bea Smith , in the first episode we see her enter Wentworth Prison and see how she starts to adapt to prison life , we see a shy woman who you wouldn't really expect to be in prison but as time goes on she makes her presence known and the woman start looking up to her.

This is definitely a really good series and worth a watch , it's got great storylines and really amazing cast and crew who play everything so well and keeps you hooked the whole way through

This is an excellent series. Danielle McCormack who plays Bea Smith is exceptional. Also the actress who plays Jacks is terrific. Aaron Jeffrey is also amazing in this. I also love Franky Doyle. She is such a character in this. The storylines are gritty and the acting is flawless. It would have been good if they had featured Catherine McClements from Water Rats in the series. I can't wait for the next series. Hoping Frankie will be the new top dog
