How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended!

First, only a few episodes of this series are based on established scientific facts and knowledge, most of the others have gone into the realm of science fiction including computer-generated images of alien worlds and possible alien life forms and, and future sex in space CG effects?

The drums and bass sounds in the background and all the booms, bangs, hundreds of images coming in and out and shaking the screen in all episodes completely unnecessary and REALLY ANNOYING!!! Sometimes you cannot even hear the narration over the beats and bangs!

It's really tiring to watch this because of the shaking images and loud sudden unexpected sounds, the whole series is like a carousel of disaster!!!!

Also, the examples / demonstrations used to explain the phenomenons are repeating on an on, several times, practically the whole series time can be cut in less than half of actual scientific content.

It’s also irritating (as other users said) that the producers of this series have interruptions predicting death and destruction on Earth!! On all episodes, every few minutes - again and again and again and again....

History Channel! Redo this, put all series together and produce one great series out of these, by cutting out off the rubbish!!

Not recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but will be better with subtitles
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 November 2013

I have already seen this season in dvd. The bluray edition improves a little this product for the pictures, but not fundamentally.
For me, as a French wiyhout a good knowledge of English, the bluray edition would have been better with subtitles "English for the impaired of earing". It helps those with this problem, but also us foreigners.
History Channel bluray editions of seaspn 2 to season 6 of this serie have subtitles.
I don't understand why they have not done the same thing for season 1.
Anyway, from what I understand, it's a very interesting serie. At the end of season one, you will find a good documentary about the Big Bang theory. And i was surprised that some great astronomers don't believe in it.
I verified if I had well understood on Encyclopaedia Britannica. And I was right;
Glas to have understood a complex question !!!.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too sensational
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 January 2011

It's hard to describe this documentation without referring to it as "typical US style". If you know other documentation from the US with their overly sensationalist story and pictures, then you know what to expect from this one. The picture quality on the BR is ok, though many of the computer graphics look somewhat cheap. Some of the clips used to illustrate the story don't really match the narrative or are unnecessary, but at other times there is a good selection of original material. The documentation covers a wide range of topics, and presents them with many interesting details.

I would have preferred a less dramatic version with more focus on the actual science, so I am not too impressed. For an example of what I would consider a good documentation on space, see
Wonders Of The Solar System [Blu-ray] [2010 ]. But if you like the more dramatic style of documentations, then "The Universe" might be a good choice for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Wonders of the Solar System, but more content
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 September 2010

Made in 2007, it is pretty much upto date. It also covers the Moon, Neptune, Uranus and Pluto, which are not covered in Wonders of the Solar System. You have to get over the American accents and outdated units, deg F, pounds and miles. As it is 12 episodes and 9 hours, it has more content than Wonders of the Solar System. It is a bit slow but worth getting. I will order series 2.

1.0 out of 5 stars Misleading Description
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 October 2012

When I ordered the complete season 1 of The Universe this product came up as a suggestion as to what other people buy at the same time. Looking at the details of the product it says it is the complete season 2. IT IS NOT. In fact it is just part of season 1. Best to buy the complete season 1 (on 3 discs).

Now noticed that this review has been allocated to season 2 incorrectly. To clarify, my review is regarding the large 6 DVD box set of season 1.
