I have always admired Alan as an actor but now I admire him even more as a man. This book is both moving and funny and as such we really feel part of his journey from a less than happy childhood to a discovery that despite everything he emerged as an extremely likeable and grounded man. Take the time to read and enjoy this book it’s well worth it

2.0 out of 5 starsAnother sad story

I am really sorry for Alan's terrible treatment by an abusive father, I can't imagine how hard it must have been and am sure many people will identify with this story. To me though it just doesn't really feel like it's written for the audience, it feels like something he had to almost exorcise from himself. That's fine but it doesn't always make for the best authorship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alan to be intelligent and reasonable and the father to be a monster

I was not familiar with Alan Cummings probably because I live in regional area of Australia where his face and work are not well known. Having an interest in both theatre and dysfunctional families....and the relationship between the two....I decided to read it anyway. I actually devoured it in one setting, finding the writing engaging, Alan to be intelligent and reasonable and the father to be a monster.
Cumming's arrival at some sort of understanding, coping and decision to sponsor mental illness are inspiring.

Great story and hearing it read by the author made it more real. This is a memoir, not fiction so the personal voice is really important.

Absolutely cracking good read! I'm a fan of Alan Cumming and hope one day he will bring a show to Australia. Comes well recommended whether the reader is a fan or not!

I loved this book, after seeing Alan interviewed on Australian TV, a bought Alan's book and his recommendation "Maggie and me". Both heartbreaking, but wonderful.

How great to read the autobiography of a famous actor that doesn't include a lot of name dropping! A sensitive, moving, honest account of his life from a sensitive, moving, honest man. I thoroughly recommend it.

I loved this book. It was humorous, poignant and inspiring, and never seemed self-indulgent. Very well written. I look forward to reading more of his books.
