4.0 out of 5 starsA lot to unpack
Reviewed in Australia on 27 January 2022
This was my first Liane Moriarty book. It was different than I thought, a little more intense on one hand and yet sometimes the conversation was boring / ordinary. I did enjoy it though and couldn’t stop reading to see what happened with the characters. There was definitely a lot to unpack with all the different storylines and characters and crossovers. Occasionally (especially at the beginning) I found it chopping and changing so much it was hard to keep track of who was who and what was going on. However once you get it into it, it wasn’t bad.

I guessed the secret fairly early though Moriarty did a good job trying to throw me off. Occasionally I got a bit bored by the banal conversation / thinking, however pushing through that I enjoyed the story.

Lots of characters and subplots that connect together as the story goes on and all culminate in a shared ending though obviously with different outcomes for everyone. I didn’t really feel satisfied at the end or that everything wrapped up fully, though I understand they were real and flawed characters and it was meant to leave you thinking. I didn’t overly love the ending for Tess, Liam and Will and particularly felt that not everything got wrapped up there though I know I am being finicky but even little stuff like Liam’s schooling, their agency and the plane hand holding etc. I think if something is introduced to the reader it needs to be wrapped up. Also I liked Tess so was disappointed with her ending.

I liked the sliding doors epilogue to give you ideas of what else could have been.

I did feel that Janie’s ending was flawed, considering she had a doctors appointment, I think that would have been investigated more.

A good read though with lots to unpack.

Was hoping this would be a light but engaging book to take my mind off other things, but it was so long boring and tedious that I ditched it. It’s like overhearing a boring conversation in a cafe on Sydney’s north shore about people you avoid because they are irritatingly banal. Guessed the secret and found the treatment of it so flippant I stopped reading. Didn’t finish as I kept wishing violence upon them all, and the narrators strange accents were cringeworthy.

The husband's secret puts everyone in a spin and you do have to keep your eye on the ball, as the plot is intricate. Each character plays a strong part in what is a very clever comprehension of the emotions that are involved as the story is set up and the actors begin to take their places on the stage.
Ordinary families are not ordinary people, even though we always assume they are. It is so safe to accept that each of us is just 'getting on with life' and 'what you see is what you get'. This story makes sure you become aware that is not true.
People hold terrible secrets, not just from the outside world but within their families and others in the family sometimes know.
In this case each member is clear cut, their reactions are strong and the reader is drawn along each wishing something good would come out of it all. Something good is not always recognisable, and in this case it is more what life is really all about, accepting the truth and growing to live with it.
A worthwhile thought provoking story that is very hard to put down.

I have never read a book by Liane Moriarty before - but I loved it from the first page. So well written; I loved the interplay between the 3 main groups of characters. I would never have guessed the contents of the letter which the successful mother stumbled across. It was meant to be opened on her husbands death but he was alive and clearly did not want her to open it. The ramifications of the words written in that letter were huge and could have resulted in many outcomes. The outcome chosen by Liane made for a great and believable story which changed the lives of all the characters - how they reacted and how they re-evaluated themselves and their views. I am now reading Big Little Lies by Liane and very much enjoying that too.

I can't begin to tell you how much I loved this book, also bought it for my Mum and she's loving it, a friend has downloaded to her iPad and loves it...it's just well written, funny, and clever and all of the characters are so likeable in their own way. Do yourself a favout and read this book...it's a page turner from start to finish I promise. I've just bought another of Liane Moriarty's novels and can't wait to start it. Excellent work Liane x

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Australian story.

This one of several books I have read by Liane Moriarty. So far they are all written in the second person with the lady characters taking turns relating events from their point of view. The men characters however are also strongly developed through the minds of the ladies. This one is a mystery centred around an unsolved murder. Set in Sydney and Melbourne I could relate to a lot of the anecdotes about raising children in a modern environment. There is plenty of witty and amusing humour.

This is a well crafted novel that beautifully weaves together the lives of a number of families and events in their lives. It is a book about actions we take and decisions we make in our lives and the impacts that they can have on us and on others around us and the costs that can come with them. Liane writes a very easy to read novel, but it is not light in quality. The characters are well developed and the insights into human nature make the novel an enriching and moving experience. I enjoyed the entire novel but I particularly like the ending. I would recommend it highly.

Another gripping saga true to the author’s style. A very compelling read which had me compulsively turning the pages until the very end. I loved the way the story unfolds from all the different angles of each character.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decisions and consequences

I guess I always figured that people did what they knew until they knew better, and then they did better. It is somewhat more complicated than that when the person actually gets tested and the concept of lose is brought in to the picture. This is what this story highlights so well, you can never really assume to know which way someone will react to obstacles in life, nor how far reaching those decisions will be.

A secret so deep, a lie so believed.... what an amazing story.
I couldn’t put this book down..

The twist in the tale leaves you wondering.... there is no satisfactory conclusion. The author leaves you guessing to the very end.
