To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
The film would have been enjoyable but for the German sub titles. There was no mention of these sub titles in the product description. This was the second Ladykillers dvd on which there was German sub titles with no way of getting rid of them. The seller should inform the buyer if the dvd has sub titles.
I thoroughly agree with all the other reviewers that this is a truly great film. Wonderful cast; excellent sets; engaging plot; hilarious situations; and let's not forget those parrots.
As a hearing-handicapped viewer, I have had to deduct two stars from my rating. One for the fact that there are no English subtitles. The other for the fact that the Dutch subtitles cannot be switched off and are very distracting for someone who does not speak Dutch. This applies to my copy of the DVD. Perhaps Amazon have run out of stock of the English version but did not bother to let us know?
One of England's classic commedies but all Blu-ray releases are without English subtitles. This release claimed to have subtitles - I even checked with Amazon before buying - but what is shipped is the standard release. Amazon need to sort this out. In this day and age it is not acceptable to ommit subtitles for the hearing impaired and those to whom English is a second language.
What the...?! The back of the case lists an enticing series of extra features but play the blu-ray and ZERO of the listed extras are included. Holy cow. OK, the film: I love this movie to death and would give the movie itself probably a 9-star rating on IMDb, perhaps 10 because this film is nearly perfect in every way. But Amazon is about selling items, and so my three-star rating is for the blu-ray sold here. The print is pretty clean and sound fine for a movie from 1955 - the colors are wonderful; the street scenes reminded me of hand-painted old postcards. But the disc arriving with a case that says it has extras, only to have none of them actually on the disc, reduces my rating down to three (and I debated giving only two but I guess my love for this movie made me feel generous). The absence of extras, having listed them on the case, is appalling.
This is one of my favorite movies, and was happy to find one at a reasonable price, but the one that was sent to me from a third party seller was supposed to be in English and French and it is only using French. So if you speak French you’re in luck.
Somewhat of an old fashioned silly comedy that revolved too much around the central role of the "sweet" old lady. She (Katie Johnson) played her part superbly and really out-shined the very good actors who played with her (Guinness, Sellers, et al). I can see how people might really think this film is hilarious but it reminded me too much of a Disney type family oriented comedy.
