5.0 out of 5 starsFalling

This story will draw you into a world that's often misunderstood and misrepresented by society. You will fall in love with the protagonist and feel intense emotions that will cause your heart to contemplate the issues of love and passion as she finds herself falling in love with the perfect man who is ultimately flawed just like everyone else. What character flaws are acceptable and what character flaws are unacceptable are explored in depth. Wave after wave of the people who shape our hearts and therefore our perspective will challenge your heart. Falling in love and remaining in love are truly distinguished by the choices we make along the journey. That's what I was able to receive reading this truly naked truth tale of love.

1.0 out of 5 starsFormulaic treatment of an important subject
Reviewed in Australia on 7 October 2021
Got to 20% and still wasn’t invested. Skipped ahead to see if it got better. Enough to see that the heroine had married a domestically violent man just like her mother did. The other person her father beat up was the homeless boy her 15 yo self was helping. It’s true that family dynamics often play out these kinds of repetitions. But this story doesn’t reach out into humanity: there’s something bleakly, soullessly narcissistic about it as can be the case with a first person narrative. The author is obviously intelligent and can write but the whole story feels spiritually and psychologically cramped. Trite even. I’ve turned to Jonathan Franzen’s new book with relief. There, wondrous humanity rolls out its carpets in all their glory and vainglory. Thousands will disagree no doubt: it is a best seller and there’s usually a good reason why books get into that category. This is a subject that needs a lot more nuance, depth and realism. Wisdom.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite five, still beautifully written

This opening alone, without even the author's name attached is a one click!

"As I sit here with one foot on either side of the ledge looking down.." If only every book opened this way.

Told trough Lilly's POV, her story, this book is both beautifully written, heart breaking and real. It's also something you need to be in the correct mindset to read, content warnings might be absent, but it's not as sweet as the cover suggests. Life never is.

The missing star - it felt rushed. Detailed, emotional, then rushed in the last moments.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking

This was heartbreaking to read.
Lily grew up in an abusive household. Although he never touched her, her father beat her mother and Lily often put herself in between them. She couldn’t understand why her mother didn’t leave.
Then she meets and falls in love with Ryle, and just when she thinks that she has everything she could wish for, he hits her.
She has to decide if she can forgive him and move forward. And just to make matters more complicated, since running into her first love again unexpectedly, she can’t help wondering how things could have been different.
This was such a hard read - what I thought to be so black and white has so many grey areas, and I ended up feeling torn by the decisions Lily makes and wishing things not to play out as they did! It also made me feel very grateful.
I would recommend the read but it comes with a trigger warning. It was so well written and I wasn’t surprised to learn at the end that it based on the author’s true experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just Keep Swimming....

It Ends With Us surprised me. A different read of Colleen Hoover’s, one written direct from the heart. My heart was really torn reading those book for many reasons. I felt for Lily, I felt for Atlas, I felt for Ryle and I felt for Lily’s mum. This book really made me sit back and think about what I would do, in her situation. What’s right and what’s wrong and in whose opinion?

Lily’s strength to make the right decision not just for her but for others on her life is remarkable, though sometimes I just wanted to shake her, but I loved reading about her teenage years and her 24 year old self. When life got tough, she just ‘kept on swimming’ hoping every wave led her to happiness and the right decisions.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I really just could have kept reading!

This is about Lily, Atlas, the homeless boy she saved & then the new man in her life Ryle. The latter was focussed on his career & a non committed life. It was one of those Insta attraction moments for both. But what happens if your past collides with your present?

Do you really know someone? So if you've been the victim of an abusive relationship that often turns out to be the case esp from first impressions. I must admit Ryle did show us his real side then but like many others I don't want to believe the way the course of their lives changed. I know this is done so authors can tell their story. (Don't get me wrong I didn't condone his actions OK !)

I also feel there wasn't enough of Adam in the latter part of the story. It just lacked something for me before it became more.

After all the drama, Lily's ending was one we have to assume worked out for her but it ended too abruptly for me. I don't like being left hanging without it all being tied up. But this is a work of fiction & it's one we have to deal with.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful in its honesty

This is a book that everyone needs to read at least once. Did I love it? Mm I'm not sure, but what I did love was the brutal honesty in a delicate subject.
It ends with us was perfectly written, a story of a cycle breaking. My first CoHo book and it won't be my last.

SPOILER FREE REVIEW :)
tw - discusses sensitive subjects with rather graphic descriptions. wouldn't recommend for younger readers (best for ages 16/17+ in my opinion) and/or if you're uncomfortable with mentions of abuse/toxic relationships.

still deciding between 4 and 5 stars because idk how i feel about the ending. i purchased this book because everyone on booktok raves about it, and it has good reviews. overall i definitely enjoyed it, finished it so quickly as i couldn't put it down. emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end.

4.0 out of 5 stars It ends with us

Really good popular fiction that manages to address the issue of domestic violence in a very realistic way. The idea that genuinely nice people can inflict violence due to unaddressed issues lurking below the surface is explored indepth. The book sends a strong message that even in a relationship with someone you love very much who is doing these things, it does have to stop in order to break the cycle.

The book is written in a style that young adults will particularly be able to relate to as most of the characters are young adults. I'm middle aged and was a bit reluctant to buy it because of the target audience but was very interested in the message and themes. I'm glad I did.

FAST PASED!!! The book covers serious topics that might trigger some people. I think this book has a good lesson behind it. I don’t think the ending was as well written than the start. But definitely a well spent reading day
