A great Samurai film, and typical of Kurosawa, which I have loved in the past. It is good to see it in glorious colour. However I now find the tragedy and spotlight on the negative aspects of human behaviour too heavy for enjoyable "entertainment". But if you are a samurai and Kurosawa fan this is 1st class.
The film is brilliant, but the blurb suggesting this is a 4k restoration is not true, this disc appears to be standard definition, not even HD, and my disc has rather over bright colours, the neon red costumes against brilliant green grassy hillside is odd. I have viewed on a Samsung 4k player over to a 4k Samsung TV.
Japanese culture in visual form is either wholly misunderstood or it is seminal study about something what even Japanese makers and thir domestic audience are not sure what is going about. It is as lets take this medium and use it for doing what others do about us in our costumes. Cruelty what Japanese environment harbour their shame psychology and absurdity of their domestic ritual management is what present day Global order would like to recreate. as if Mossul or Raka Islamic state would be scripted from Japanese islands.
I was expecting too much it seems. Firstly, the film is fantastic, one of the best, a brilliant reworking of King Lear. Unfortunately, the picture quality leaves a fair bit to be desired. Whilst the colours are excellent and I noticed no 'digital artifacts', the picture is soft, sometimes very soft. There is not a single frame that is sharp on the whole BluRay. It is a great disappointment indeed.
I bought this knowing it was not Region 1, but cannot get it to work on computer with a non-region specific Blu-Ray device. Ended up eating the cost as I had waited too long to return it, and ended up buying an iTunes version.
