Stabbing into the dark recesses of our minds and revealing our motivations, Mark sheds light on the values that we hold and which of them cause us problems. He reveals the real problem with the young generation and how it can be fixed. And finally he helps us see what to care about and how to really live.

This book kept popping up in my environment and finally I took the hint and bought it - now I know why the universe wanted me to read it. Thanks universe and thanks Mark for the best book I've read for ages.

2.0 out of 5 starsHooked.. at first...

I have to say, i read a sample of the start of this book and i was absolutely hooked!!! I could not have downloaded it on my kindle fast enough. It was witty, relatable and a real page turner. Unfortunately, soon after the first chapter, i really had to force myself to keep reading the book. To me, it lacked substance and intrigue, and the message probably could have been summed up in an article rather than an entire book. It's not that i didnt agree with the message of the book because the author makes some absolutely spot on points. I was dissapointed that i only got glimpses of the author. I felt that the book could have been more personal from his perspective instead of constantly referencing stories of other people in the past. It just made it hard to get stuck into because, at times, it felt like you were reading a series of somewhat relevant short stories that were tied together with a repetitive message. Sorry.

3.0 out of 5 stars There are many aspects of the books I liked but I found some of it somewhat contradictory

I understand the appeal of the book, and why it has been so popular.

There are many aspects of the books I liked but I found some of it somewhat contradictory. Mark speaks with alot of passion and enthusiasm which is great. HOWEVER, he fails to back up alot of his points with hard facts, and rather tells particular stories that validate his points. There are of course, countless other stories that would disprove his arguments.

The book is essential Mark Manson's opinions on life. Some of it is fantastic, but other parts are just opinion. He always swears a little too much for my liking!

5.0 out of 5 stars Persist reading even if the first chapter ‘triggers’ you, it’s worth it!

The language and the example used in Chapter 1 kinda triggered me if I’m honest. I reminded myself to keep an open mind because I’ve heard good reviews (and we shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover.. or it’s first chapter!). From the 2nd chapter onward, the book just gets better and better. The content and substance of the book reveals itself to be fantastic. I understand that the title of the book and maybe even the first chapter is playing on sensationalism to get a different kind of audience interested in and reading this content that is vitally important and truly valuable to us all. I’ll read this one again and again. Highly recommended reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth your time

By no means perfect but it is refreshing to read a no-nonsense approach to living a good life that avoids most of the platitudinous nonsense of so much self-help advice these days. Of course, this book is, despite its author’s claims, also a self-help book. But it certainly takes a different approach, and not only because of the frequent appearance of the F-word. (After about a third of the book, the use of this word gradually diminishes, and the writing becomes a little more serious — but not too much!)
The essential message of the book is that we are constantly bombarded by messages from outside of ourselves to “give a f*** about just about everything. These messages come from marketing, social media, society, friends, parents, peer groups, tv, movies, books — the list goes on and on. Fulfilling all these demands to give a f*** about everything are overwhelming and impossible to achieve. And if we try to achieve them all we’ll end up spiralling into some very unhealthy ways of living and being.
The answer is to decide for ourselves what we truly value and decide to remain rigorously focused on giving a f*** about these things.
That’s it. Well … not quite, of course. That needs to be fleshed out. And Manson does that in an easy to read, entertaining style that makes for a quick read — at least quicker than it will take to implement this “counter-intuitive approach”.
I can detect elements of Stoic philosophy, cognitive behavioural therapy, and a few other philosophical and psychological perspectives behind the ideas in this book. But technical language is nowhere to be seen. This book is written for layperson and provides lots to chew over despite the easily digestible recipe.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is tired of the cliched approach of much self-help. The ideas in this book, if taken seriously and applied in living, can be liberating and empowering. And even if you are already knowledgeable about the ideas in the book, check it out. It’s always worth exploring things we already know in ways we haven’t considered before. This book is certainly worth giving a f*** about despite its few flaws.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome

Wasn't sure what I felt at first. Once I realised he wasn't talking about NOT caring but about not caring too much about stupid things and people that suck our energy and waste our time - I really enjoyed it. Had a few laughs along the way and it helped me clarify who and what I give a F about and why. Great read without being too heavy or deep.

5.0 out of 5 stars The one book I would gift to anyone
Reviewed in Australia on 4 October 2017

People NEED this book. It's eye-opening, thought-provoking, and above all, brutally honest. I have thought of these concepts before on a very abstract level, but having them put into words like this is a transformative experience. You will learn to look at your life in a different way, you will learn to understand how deeply rooted some problems can be, and you will learn how to deal with them. Interestingly enough, this book was very existential for me and really struck a chord, allowing things to really sink in and make sense. Honestly, reading this book has given me clarity in terms of relationships, thoughts, struggles, happiness and life itself. Do yourself a favor, read this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful. The desperation to be perceived as cool made me cringe.

Truly awful. The attempt to be cool through the overuse of the word “f@ck” becomes tiresome within 2 pages. I could not relate to the examples he was giving as to why we need to change to stop giving a f@ck. Clearly I’m not his target market. Author was trying way too hard. By the time he started humble bragging about giving up college and moving to South America and how cool he was to not give a f@ck about it, I had had enough. Got to 8% then gave up. I clearly didn’t give enough of a f@ck to start with.

2.0 out of 5 stars Shallow, repetitive, waste of time, energy and money.

A waste of time!

At the beginning it sounded interesting as the author has used swear words and the tone was very natural, the kind of tone you would have with your close mates.

The success matrix part was helpful that you need to define correct matrix and the examples of Metallica tied well into it.

However, after that, the book really was just random talk, the kind of philosophy you would expect from a person who has had drugs and started talking philisophically.

I regret reading this book as i could have read a better book than this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some truisms and lots of fun
Reviewed in Australia on 31 July 2020

This book undoubtedly contains a lot of truisms from a selection of different western and Eastern Philosophies.
Most of all it gives lots of examples, where and when you should give a F.... and others, where you might not want to .... Yes, it is inspiring, to think about, what it is in your life that is worth giving, or not giving a F... about.
The number of gov depts, businesses and people I no longer give a F... is increasing at an alarming/exponential rate.
Better keep my energy for those who are worth it.... Becoming more conscious of your selections...
Certainly inspiring and fun reading. - a bit of fresh air , if you have had interest in similar motivational books.....
