My son loved Oi Frog and asked for Oi Cat aswell. It's a fun way to introduce children to rhyme and the dry humour keeps adults entertained as they read it for the 135th time. Many of the animals are obscure and some of the rhymes a bit tenuous but when I took my son to the farm and he announced 'alpacas sit on cream crackers' I knew we were onto a winner!
My Children and I absolutely LOVE these books. Reading this book, in our house, gets very crazy as we laugh and shout at all the animals; especially Cat, Dog and that Frog... while learning about the different letter sounds, and spellings... and the correct seat for each animal, of course! Suitable for all ages; My son (7) now reads them to his sister (4)... and they can't get enough!
Oi cat is a great hird book in the series that we have purchased. I highly recommend these series of books (oi frog & Oi dog). They have been great fun to read to my 3 year old son. Now that he is 4 I felt this book was now appropriate. Discovering new animals and rhyming words has been a great way to develop a now fantastic vocabulary and memory.
Never read any of the oi series, home schooling an the school sent a video of the teacher reading a book (oi frog). That was it, my 4 year old was hooked and we've now got the whole series ?! We even mess around making up our own ones. Some are better than others but my children love reading them so that's all that matters.
It's easy just to skip pages of rhymes if they're tired and the story still works. This book can last as long or as short as you want to read it. Written with a dry humour showing the characters having little digs at each other, which is refreshing in a children's book.
BUT, and this is a big but... for me this is the final title in the series. I've seen what follows 'Oi Cat' and it feels like the theme has been milked as far as it can go. So I've decided to stop at the 3rd one, and I have a very happy toddler (23months).
Lovely series and idea, with excellent illustrations.
The rhyming is, as ever, very good. There are a lot of rhyming stories out there from well known stories which don't work very well, so it's really not easy. The story is a bit random as always, and I did think a few times before getting it because, well, it's a bit like when Hollywood turn a trilogy into four films when they really should have left it at three. But it was much better than that. Not the children's favourite of the oi series but still fun!!
