4.0 out of 5 starsA true Aussie outback tale 4.5*
Reviewed in Australia on 28 December 2018
A very Aussie bush tale with one very independent Cressy. A town full of secrets & some that haunt Denham that he won't commit to his true love. There's a lot of push pull going on perhaps some a bit repetitious.
The scene for this tale is set beautifully with the Aussie outback, even with its worst, being drought.
A bit of Aussie humour with the knitters & the friendly cantankerous bull but also focus on something quite upsetting with our male farmers.
A genuine Aussie tale one that would appeal to many.

A warm, gripping story with wonderful word pictures of cattle, dry grass and rodeos. I just had to keep reading to see who ended up with who.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lovely story
Reviewed in Australia on 9 October 2019
I enjoyed this on a number of levels. Firstly it was a nice story, with a good romance, and plenty of other action to keep me interested.
Cressy is exactly the sort of female character I like to see, she runs a farm on her own, and volunteers with a rural rescue service as well. Like me she likes to rescue animals too.
I have read a number of cowboy stories set in America, but this was the first one I have read set in Australia, and being from New Zealand it was good to read something from my part of the world.
I loved seeing Kelpies in the book, I own a rescue Kelpie, and they are smart, loyal and affectionate, but also have a mind of their own just like Tippy in the book.
The story telling was vivid, I could almost smell the steak and onions in the fair scene.
The story deals with some serious issues around mental health, and I believe it is important for these issues to be brought up, in New Zealand the rates of suicide are much higher in rural areas, it needs to be talked about.
I will be reading more of this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure feel-good reading
Reviewed in Australia on 23 January 2017
Thw Long Paddock resonates so well for me. Alissa Callen has captured the heart of the country and woven it into a captivating story of love, hope and persistence against the odds.
So many events depicted in this story have clearly been drawn from real life and from a strong understanding of life on the land. Alissa Callen has touched on the subjects of rural mental health, drought and the hardship it brings, and also that wonderful sense of community that is so much a part of small country town living.
There's a good deal of warmth and humour in this novel delivered through both the genuine concern characters display for each other and through the quirky yarn bombing that pops up nearly every time Cressy pops into town.
This book has brought me smiles and moments where I have really connected with the characters or smiled at those familiar small town events and the way everyone pulls together to make them a success. For pure feel-good reading you'd be hard pressed to go past Alissa Callen. I just loved this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars As an Aussie, I loved reading this book

I have given 5 stars because I could not put this book down.
The characters are real but I do have one concern.
I know Americans greet each other by saying “hey” but we don’t.
Stay true to yourself Alissa.
