Dark and gory, this brilliantly written account of the haunt for Jack the Ripper is both gruesome and captivating at the same time., although the author changes the timeline slightly this does not impact on the quality of the storytelling. The characters are believable especially Audrey Rose, who feels trapped and stifled by societies expectations of her as a young lady of the times. Haunted by her mother’s death she years to learn about death and forensics and trains with her Uncle who is a surgeon and coroner who autopsies the victims of the Ripper, and this is how she becomes involved.
The locations of the Ripper murders are correct as are the order of each killing, some changes were made to location access particularly with regards to Dorset Street and Miller’s Court, the location of the murder of May Jane Kelly, the last of the Ripper’s victims, however this was so subtly done that I did not notice it and it did not spoilt the narrative and plot.
Maniscalco describes  the injuries inflicted on each of the victims in detail, and some of this information is pretty gory, especially that pertaining to Mary Jane Kelly. The murder of Elizabeth Stride as part of the Double event is mentioned only in passing and more detail is given to Catherine Eddowes.
This was so well written that I was only aware of the slight changes Maniscalco made at the end of the book, when she explained them in a note explaining why this was done .

An excellent book definitely worth picking up

I loved this book! it's so different from anything I've read before, I'm not the biggest crime fan but this was different. It was a dark, gripping story that I couldn't put down! Dark and gory, this brilliantly written account of the haunt for Jack the Ripper is both gruesome and captivating at the same time., although the author changes the timeline slightly this does not impact on the quality of the storytelling. Kerri Maniscalco's writing is just amazing.

One bid thing is: I love Audrey Rose. She has definitely joined my list of favourite MCs/protagonists, she's feisty and stubborn and brave in a time that teaches girls they need to be the complete opposite. Even when her father threatens to toss her out onto the streets, she continues to pursue science and stands up to him - which is one of my favourite scenes in the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Victorian Nancy Drew

Audrey Rose Wadsworth is no ordinary Victorian young lady. She spends her time with her mortician uncle learning autopsy. A long comes Thomas Cresswell and together they want to find out who is Jack the Ripper.

I love anything to do with Jack the Ripper and Victorian London so this book was right up my street. I quite enjoyed the story and spending time with Audrey Rose. She really is a great character as she bustles around the East End, a Victorian Nancy Drew.

I do have to agree with another reviewer that Thomas is very much like Sherlock Holmes. They way he comes across, his manner, speech and crime solving with observations. The only thing he needed was a pipe and violin.

The story does revolve around the ripper murders and facts are used but the author in her notes explaines her liberties. The book at times due to it's storyline is quite graphic and very gory.

I enjoyed this book enough to order the next one but didn't love it as much as I though I would. However the story was enjoyable and I will look forward to next outing with Audrey Rose.

Why did I put off reading this series ( yes it is a near complete series now) I feel I may have had some pre conceived ideas that were so unnecessary This book was amazing. I am in love with Thomas Cresswell and as for the female MC she is great and flawed yet finds inner strength to get through the worst ****** SPOILER FREE REVIEW ******* if you enjoy Victorian times with their etiquettes and brewing romance mixed with prejudices against women and people fighting them realistically mixed with murder and intense moments You will adore this I cannot wait to carry on with this series

As soon as I heard about this book I had to have it.

Jack The Ripper and his crimes are wildly known and I've always been interested in his story.... hopefully that doesn't sound to creepy!!!

This twist on Jack was very enjoyable. Gruesome and compelling.

I loved all the characters.

I absolutely adored Audrey Rose!!

I will admit there was times that the story wasn't as exciting for me as other parts but I still loved this story and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Jack The Ripper, and loves plenty of gruesomeness.

This book was well written and quite gory in some parts but also a great read if you like a story about who Jack the Ripper may have been there were a few facts in the story but the rest was made up.
Even so I enjoyed it.

I loved the dynamic between Audrey and Creswell, very charming / witty. Audrey was a good character and I loved her hobby -- very interesting concept for a young victorian lady.
Overall 4* because some of the writing felt a bit forced and I think most people would agree the killer + his motives were slightly obvious and easy to guess with multiple hints being dropped since the start.

Honestly one of my favourite books. Thomas is probably one of my most loved book boys I’ve ever had the chance to read about and I can’t wait to see what him and Audrey get up to in the sequel.
