HDR would have been the icing on the cake with this but the super sharp pixels do it justice all the same. Nice trio to show off what 4k is like to your DVD brethren who don't see what the fuss is about. Particularly like the tornado chasing, the details are terrific. Note to the reviewer who wanted to sound off his take on climate change, stick to reviewing the videos and not your political beliefs please. Amazon shouldn't have let your review go up.
What the video is is a Climate Change / mankind has screwed-up everything hoax. Yes, there's few shots shots of the Grand Canyon but the majority of the video's focus is how man screws up everything. I've grown tired of those elites who pollute the air with their private jets & live in very areas that benefit from the water & power they get from the Colorado, then lecture others how to vote & live. If they think the dams on the Colorado have screwed-up the planet then move. Or better yet, turn off your power & water they get from these "endangered areas" & set an example. Robert Kennedy, Jr made a cameo appearance to reinforce the hoax as well. Things must have been boring in Camelot, I guess (Bet he didn't fly coach ;) ). Anyway, I could of swore he actually was sweating for the first time since his last polo match.
Some have committed this video as not being 4K. Well, no blu-ray is true 4K (4096 x 2160). UHD Blu-rays are 3840 x 2160 which is the standard. The disc isn't advertised as HDR (High Dynamic Range) & it isn't that either but that would of been nice if it were.
I gave it a one because Amazon doesn't accept a ZERO!
So, the whole reason I bought this is Tornado Alley and is the reason you should too. I have been a storm chaser for more than 20 years and I try to keep a pretty good collection of films. Tornado Alley, however and to date, is only offered in this particular 4K multi-pack Blu-ray. It is a really well put-together film. Moreso than I remember watching in IMAX. The quality of the film actually surprised me - it is fantastic. Detail is very good as well as color. I am bothered by what they show as the map of what tornado alley is though. It, of course, doesn't include Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota and a few other states that actually lie within tornado alley. I attribute this a lot of chasers from the south that stop chasing when they hit Iowa and don't go far in the latter part of summer when tornadoes happen regularly in the northern states and even southern Canada. It is ironic because the footage of the intense damage and the multi-vortex large tornado was all shot in the northwestern town of Wadena, Minnesota. lol If you like storms and tornado video, this is a must-have in your collection.
When talking about the other two films, well, the Grand Canyon one has the same quality. It definitely has an agenda, as many reviews have said about it. The agenda is NOT off base though. It speaks true. I just wish it wasn't forced so hard how it is in the film. I could also do without the bubble text intro on the film that is lengthy and cheesy dumb. The footage within it though is pretty good. My rating for just the Grand Canyon video is like a 3 out of 5.
The Hidden Universe thing just really isn't my cup of tea. I don't care for that kind of stuff so I am probably not the best person to review that portion of it. I thought it was alright though.
Incredible views and audio. I imagine a lot of people buy this for an initial demo of their new UHD/Atmos setup as did I and I was not disappointed. The raft ride... well you might as well be sitting there getting water splashed on your crystal clear sun glasses cuz without the physical motion, it just looks like you're there.
The Tornado one is even more incredible and almost everything you wanted in a real life 4k Twister redeux documentary (Bill Paxton is the narrator ) The special surprise (which you wish would result in a longer shot but satisfying none the less) is epic and something we Tornado fans all waited for. This one is like bein in the center of the storms too. Exceptionally well done!
The Space set is just incredibly well done too. The difference here is it's not a natural experience you can mentally/physically relate to so the visual trips are phenomenal but it's not "you're there man". Do not let that dissuade you because the info and imagery is the best I've seen so far of space and the topic is focused on things many will find as "fresh / new info". It's space so no one can hear you scream and people hate audio in telescope rooms SO, audio is nothin special.
If you want a showcase UHD disc for your system that you can watch more than several times and be excited to show others, this is a good one for you :)
These 3 films had some nice eye popping details, but Grand Canyon Adventure and Hidden Universe were clearly originally IMAX 3D films. It would have been great if there had been 2D and 3D versions included as was the case with some other IMAX UHD disc (the Journey to Space 4k disc comes to mind). Tornado Alley would be of interest to anyone who had followed Sean Casey’s struggles on getting the IMAX camera and his TIV vehicle into the tornadoes on the Discovery Channel’s reality series “Storm Chasers”. I wanted to see it for that reason alone. I would imagine it plays a bit better with really good surround sound (to get the full effect of being inside an actual tornado). The extra detail, HDR, and more vibrant colors were welcome on all 3 documentaries, but because IMAX 3D usually has better 3D than other formats, it would have been nice to have included 2 versions of those IMAX docs.
I purchased this disc hoping and expecting to (at last!) see Sean Casey's IMAX film, "Tornado Alley." Turns out "UltraHD" discs do not play on Blu-ray players. So I still have not been able to see the exciting tornado film. I wasted my money. And I cannot review this product, only to say it is not compatible with either my player or my expectations.
A Google search for "Best Dolby Atmos soundtracks " led me here, so I ordered it ..even read a review where a buyer talks about how great the Dolby Atmos sounded.. I put in my 4k HD player and only option is 5.1.. none of the 3 Segments are in Dolby Atmos..very disappointed..it did not even look like 4k.. just like a Blu-ray 1080 transfer to 4k format.. this is not Amazon's fault.. this is mine for not looking at the backside picture where it does not say Dolby Atmos..and for ordering based on one incorrect review.. I will return this.. I still have time but, there many great Atmos movies available..this is not one of them !
Picture and sound are stunning. Disappointed with "Grand Canyon Adventure" as it's mostly about the Colorado river (not exactly about the Grand Canyon) and following Robert Kennedy Jr. and his family on a trip. Nothing very exciting. Was hoping for more "beauty shots" and a different educational aspect.
