I eagerly await each new Reacher novel - absolutely love the character - but this novel it became distracting with every characters thought processes being written in the same way as Reacher thinks and acts. The standard way Childs writes has evolved into using the same speech patterns for all the characters - this takes Jack's unique thought processes from being a focal point of the story to everyone doing it. I saw this as a distraction and lessened the impact of a Reacher novel. Go back and read your earlier work to understand what I mean.

3.0 out of 5 starsTired and Worn
Reviewed in Australia on 5 January 2018
Jack Reacher is a larger than life character, the all American (or nearly - his mother was French) hero, and similarly one dimensional. But it is a strong franchise and can always be counted on to deliver a fast paced intriguing narrative with a strong resolution. But it has also become very predictable.
I have been a fan of this series for some years, but I am now wondering whether it has become stale and humdrum. The framework for each narrative is always the same. Somewhere in some little corner of America horrendous events are occurring, and Reacher, always only a bus ride away, arrives in time to render justice with his usual display of combat readiness. It is never one on one with Reacher. He always manages to dispatch a clutch of 'bad dudes' without raising too much of a sweat.
Risking the ire of Child's legion of fans, I suggest the series could do with an injection of something new. Perhaps a change of direction or a different environment. Maybe it's time for Reacher to stop wandering and start a new career? And whose idea was it to star Tom Cruise in the series? Physically he is completely the wrong choice. One of the characteristics of Reacher, is his size. Cruise just doesn't cut it.

I saw a number of negative reviews of this book and nearly didn’t buy it - but I am on holiday and have read all of the other Reacher books so thought I’d risk it. And I’m glad I did. This showed a side of Reacher we don’t see very often. Rather than relying on his fists, Reacher uses his brain. The story comes together at a slower pace than others in the series - which may have disappointed some readers - but I found it compelling. Just disappointed that I have now read all of the Jack Reacher novels!

Lee Child you are STRUGGLING with new concepts for JR and this one misses the mark completely, you have taken this once strongly independent and self assured man and turned him into a shadow of that person whom he was at the beginning of the series, he has become a wimpy docile giant who falls for the sad tales of any female he comes across and this one takes the cake completely, Why the VA were not actively involved in assisting this decorated Vet is not covered whatsoever and leaves me bewildered, why JR sets asides his morals and beliefs so completely and assists in conspiring by robbery to fund this drug addled pathetic excuse for a ex soldier with illegal drugs is just rubbish, no more money from me Mr Lee Child, please, put Jack to rest, give him a FINAL send off befitting a true hero that he is in one last onslaught against all odds and let him go out with dignity.

The first half of this book was terrific. The action was flying along and I thought Lee was back to his best following some lacklustre results. Then it bogged down as though the author had to get to a certain number of pages. The story became laboured and too much time was spent on a back and forth hunt for a person and then once found a story that also laboured in itself. I have read every book of the author and I guess I'll continue but it's becoming a chore.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read...but just.

Having read all the books in the Jack Reacher series I was hanging out to get hold of The Midnight Line. The story started strong with a bit of the usual Jack Reacher intrigue but then it dropped off to not much happening for most of the book. Towards the end we learnt a little more about the plot but I felt it was a bit flat and never really got going or had a climax.
Definitely worth a read but I like more action from Jack.

I liked the fact that it shined a very realistic light on drugs, deformaties(mutilation)and the neglect of government help for returned soldiers,PTSD,etc and how there is always some rotten group willing to “add fuel to their misery “by taking what little is left of self, dignity “and anything else !
Also,it was interwoven into the usual bloody good read from Mr Lee Child! One of his best 👍🏻

How does he do it? The journey from start to finish is so special and realistic. Like the special good times in life time does not exist while reading The Midnight Line. Lee Child has the talent too put words on paper and make the reader's imagination light up as though you are there watching events unfold before you. Like an addict I am sooo looking forward to Jack Reacher 23. It can not come to me quickly enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow to Start!

Have read every Lee Child book and always eagerly awaited the next. Always chewing through his stories in 2-3 days. However, this one took six days. It was descriptive of the terrain he was in, Montana, South Dakota, etc. And perfectly matched my lifetime imagination of what I imagined that part of the USA to be. The characters were strong. But the story didn't really start, for me at least, until three quarters the way through, by which time I'd already surmised the ending and quickly finished the book. Don't get me wrong, it's just that I'm used to a faster-paced read from Child. I still get excited waiting for his next story.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit of disappointment. Still, interesting...

I like Reacher but I must admit that in reading this book I was not as curious to read the lengthy descriptions. Maybe because I have read all the previous books and I know now Reacher's ways. Or maybe because I do find some long descriptions although very good a bit unnessary for the story.
Plus there was some repetitions of sentences as if I as the reader need a reminder...
To me 3 stars because I still like Reacher but that book is not the best of the series...
