5.0 out of 5 starsEnjoyable fast paced read Lincolnshire Detective Karen Hart and the missing girls
Reviewed in Australia on 25 April 2019
I really enjoyed this book. It had a different outcome to what I thought would happen.
The book is well written, fast paced and shows that police are human too, they have lives outside of work and make mistakes. Especially when working very long hours in the case of searching for missing children. The book is set in Lincolnshire, in the middle of England where the police have to manage a rural region of small towns and villages.
Even though I had a hunch of the abductor, there is still some un-expected twists.
I plan to read more books by this author.

3.0 out of 5 starsOverexplained and lacking restraint
Reviewed in Australia on 5 October 2021
Sorry, I could not even get to half way. Too often the characters thought, and spoke in long sentences, explaining everything several times over to each other. It felt a bit like I was reading daytime soap opera. The portrayal of police work seemed unrealistic - lacking nuance and depth - everyone seemed overly sincere. I bought based on the reviews, and feel let down. I am leaving at three stars because it may have improved over time, I just could not stay with it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Amateurish writing

Good story line but some of the writing was very amateurish.
For instance, the head of a school is called “principal”, not “head teacher” and this is basic English.

Like that it was set in Australia.
But the way it was written was like watching ice melt.
Boring.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good plot, but…
Reviewed in Australia on 13 August 2019
I thought the plot was good with an interesting twist at the end that is the reason why I gave it three stars. Unfortunately that’s where it ended for me, The characters were rough a week, coming across more like stooges than police officers. The author repeated minor information so often I wonder if she had a memory loss for what she wrote down last. It feels a bit like-paint by Numbers in word form sorry to say this, but I did feel like the author was trying to find a way to make up enough pages.

Rebecca
3.0 out of 5 stars Some confusing plot holes
Reviewed in Australia on 4 August 2021
Though I enjoyed the book I did notice that there were plot holes. Why wouldn't she have known about the secret areas of the windmill if she was so hung up on the Amy case. Surely if she had such a fixation she would know the place like the back of her hand. Not sure why the back story included the death of her husband and child. It didn't seem to influence her approach to the case much to have lost a child. Maybe it only needed the loss of a husband.
I also found the Sophie character rather immature to have passed a Detective exam.
Just a new readers opinion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average Read
Reviewed in Australia on 16 November 2019
An average read. I didn't really feel any sense of mystery or suspense - it was just a problem they neede to solve. Also too much conversation between characters was kind of brushed over and told in a past tense kind of way cutting the reader out from the dialogue. That writing style stopped me from being immersed in the story whoch could've otherwise been gripping.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ultimately disappointing

I read both books available in this series back to back. The plots were well worked out and the characterisation was not bad on the whole. I might be interested in learning more about the characters and their stories, except that I found the writing style rather clunky and clumsy. It felt as though the books were written for readers of below-average intelligence, with the bleedin' obvious continually explained and recaps of events that had only happened 20 pages previously. The editor should have been tougher, less is more and readers should be trusted to correctly interpret events, imagine emotions and draw their own conclusions without being constantly bludgeoned over the head with the obvious.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fairly good story

This booked started very well, but then all started to fall apart in chapter 10! Dc Sophie is portrayed as if she's a 6 year old child being asked if she'd like to go for an ice cream, not a grown adult and a mid ranking officer in the police force ! At one point she's asked to sit in on an interview, but told she must keep quiet. "Of course " she says making a zipping motion across her mouth!!Come on, REALLY! Also, whilst talking to DI Karen Hart she mentioned the suspects MO, " MO, Modus Operandi" sophie says excitedly! ! That is not how a DC would behave. I would be surprised if even a PC would behave in such a childlike manor. Hard to take the book seriously after such poor writing.
