5.0 out of 5 starsFocus on important stuff

I've been looking at 'smart' watches for a while...I am invested in the Google ecosystem but in my opinion the Wear OS options try to be all things to all people and end up over promising and not delivering. So I have been seeking a hybrid option that does the basics really well and is largely platform neutral (i.e. Google vs Apple vs Microsoft vs Samsung).

What are the basics? It shows the time, looks nice, provides core health measurements and the app is elegant and simple. How? I am an average guy - I want to be healthier - but I will not be performing a triathlon anytime soon... So.....I do not need a device designed by NASA; I need a device that is robust, reliable and simple to use. It needs to present info to me so I can make my own decisions and not drown me with useless data.

The battery life is excellent.

My experience has been so good I purchased a Withings Body + Scale too.

If the next generation somehow included Google Wallet & Google Play I'd buy Withings gear for a long time into the future. Great product - recommended.

1.0 out of 5 starsNot at all accurate
Reviewed in Australia on 18 December 2019
I wanted to upgrade from a Garmin Vivosmart 4 HR, and made a huge mistake by getting this Steel HR Sport. I did so after reading some reviews. I found the following problems.
The length of stride cannot be adjusted. It is set at 0.8 metre (my walking stride is 0.75 metre), so all distances are incorrect. Also, there is no difference in stride between running and walking.
The calories used is hoplessly inaccurate. I consume 2,200 - 2,600 per day, depending upon my exercise routine. The Steel never showed more than 1,700. It never recorded calories burned at gym on the cross-trainer or the bike, which usually were 300+.
Unlike the Garmin, it does not recognise when you are on a cross-trainer, or stepper machine, or rowing machine. So this exercise is never shown or recognised on the app at all. The only thing shown is the steps walking to and from the gym.
The only use for this watch, in my opinion, is to count steps and monitor your sleep. Even the max heart rate recorded is inaccurate. I have exchanged several emails with Withers support (no local phone presence) and their only comment was that they would suggest my problems as a software upgrade in due course. I have had the watch for 5 days and hope that Amazon will take it back.

2.0 out of 5 stars Functions are great.......but

Functions are great but one of the main functions, telling the time, is really difficult at t night. The black face and grey hands make it really difficult to read in low light.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice watch but not made for an active lifestyle
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 August 2021
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
The functions of the watch are good, it does everything that I bought it for Inc. Sleep tracking and heart rate. I think it's pretty good value too. However I've had 2 issues - the strap causes a bit of a rash on my wrist as the plastic doesn't allow your skin to breathe, and the glass has cracked after less than two months of use. Being a fitness tracker these things should be reasonably hard-wearing. I'm in the gym most days, throwing around heavy weight plates and dumbbells. The irony is, the glass cracked whilst I was making the bed. So yeah, bit disappointed. I'll carry on wearing it, but if the crack lets water in it will probably die.

Update: Withings very kindly reached out and replaced the watch, despite the warranty not covering accidental damage. I was really happy about that.

What I'm less happy about is the accuracy of the hrm. You can be literally gasping for breath and working hard in your training session, heart beating out of your chest, and it will show 75bpm. Like it's only counting every other beat. I just came home from a short bike ride where I was pedalling as fast as I could the whole time - for a brief period it read up to around 175 bpm which was probably about right, then it suddenly decide to drop to 85bpm where it remained for the rest of the ride.

I bought this because it seemed reasonably priced but I think it was false economy. Shame.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice looking watch poor quality glass don’t buy.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 November 2020
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
It’s a good looking watch. The app works well and the features seem very accurate. So why the two star rating? Simple the glass is poor mineral quality and for a sports watch is a complete waste of time. Had it two days and caught it on a door handle when passing through resulting in a small scratch on the glass. So no problem fitted a glass protector which did not save the glass. The scratch after two days became a huge crack from the no8 to no2 and several days later other minor cracks develop around the bezel.
Why bother making a sports watch with mineral glass that is not shock proof or scratch resistant. Contacted Withings to see if they could replace the glass and guess what they don’t, all they do is offer you a 20% discount of another watch.
Don’t buy this watch if you want to use it to track your sports activity as you will be wasting your money. Check out the forums, my mistake I should have done this. All complaints are about the poor quality glass.

2.0 out of 5 stars Better size but hard to see time

Better size than Steel HR, but the hands are impossible to see even in day light on the Sport. Well, ok, not impossible, but very hard. I returned and now have Steel HR instead. Following software update the stats that you can capture on Steel HR are very similar to Sport. No VO2 on Steel HR but other than that all good.
The Sport is a better size than Steel HR. Looks attractive, but is hard to use as a time piece. The white face model would't suffer from this problem, but I preferred the black.
It's a shame. returned and kept Steel HR.

2.0 out of 5 stars Looks great but functions did not work well at all
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 July 2019

Really liked the look of this fitness watch. I mainly bought it to track sleep, steps and heart rate.

It did a good job with heart rate, but only caught about half my steps. Also it missed more than half my sleep, so gave false analysis. Used it for 3 nights, and only one night's sleep analysis was plausible.

Sadly am sending back as just not fit for purpose. Maybe I got a dud, as I see lots of positive feedbacks, but don't want the hassle of trying another in case it is the same.

I definitely would have give 5 stars if it had worked, as looks smart and a great replacement for a traditional watch. A shame, as also good value, had it worked, as cos £101 on a Deal if the Day.

2.0 out of 5 stars The looks are the best feature. What a pity!

I got this as a Christmas present for my husband to replace his FitBit Charge 3.

I must admit, he is still wearing his Withings Steel HR sport, but it is not as good as his much older Charge 3 and he is now going back to the FitBit after four months.

The only area where the Withings beat the Fitbit is in looks and possibly battery life.
The main, but not only issue is that calculating calories do not take heartbeat into account. It is determined by the exercise type selected. Exercise selected or determined does allow for a sliding scale to enter your own effort and that will increase or decrease calories used. But this is a bit of a hit and miss action when trying to stick to a calory count diet.
We were hoping that a software upgrade may eventually address this, but unfortunately still not available.

Battery life may be better as this 'tracker' seems to only register heartbeat at ten minute intervals. He could not prove that conclusively.

So the Withings Steel HR plus two extra still brand new straps, are now going into his bedside drawer as it is too late to return.
Who knows, a software upgrade may sort out these issues but I am not holding my breath.
What a pity.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 August 2019

The battery life is all this has going for it, which could be even better if HR could be switched off but it can't! It isn't easy to read time, impossible in poor light and little scrolling text is unreadably small. Overall it feels flimsy and frail, no good for active sports. Steps and activity detection is not good and sleep detection unreliable. Withings claims the app syncs with Google Fit (the main need for me) and it doesnt. Activities are cut short, calories too small and no sleep data at all.
I expected so much more for the money and was very disappointed. Returned for refund.

2.0 out of 5 stars Style over substance
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 September 2021

Lovely looking watch, but a little small. The functionality was OK, but nothing like the Apple Watch (which I switched from). Over the course of a week or so, it felt like I had massively downgraded. I could live with the drop in functionality as I was getting tired of my iWatch notifying me every five minutes about irrelevant stuff. However what did grind my gears was the constant dropping of connection with my phone, it was becoming difficult to track fitness activities.

It is a good looking watch and I really wanted it to work for me it’s failings were too much. I have since sent it back and have reverted to the iWatch.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too many problems
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 December 2019
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
Purchased this because of the amazing battery life, however the issues I’ve been having means I have to return it.
1. Many times after sleeping the watch fails to sync with the iPhone app. The only thing you can do is Reset it.
2. Sleep tracking fails to record correct sleep duration every few nights. Last night it told me I only had around 3 hours of sleep, even though I slept for a good 7 hours.
3. I find the strap fiddly.
4. As others have said, it’s almost impossible to read the time on the black version.

I will miss the amazing battery life and the app is pretty good too.
