5.0 out of 5 starsFocus on important stuff

I've been looking at 'smart' watches for a while...I am invested in the Google ecosystem but in my opinion the Wear OS options try to be all things to all people and end up over promising and not delivering. So I have been seeking a hybrid option that does the basics really well and is largely platform neutral (i.e. Google vs Apple vs Microsoft vs Samsung).

What are the basics? It shows the time, looks nice, provides core health measurements and the app is elegant and simple. How? I am an average guy - I want to be healthier - but I will not be performing a triathlon anytime soon... So.....I do not need a device designed by NASA; I need a device that is robust, reliable and simple to use. It needs to present info to me so I can make my own decisions and not drown me with useless data.

The battery life is excellent.

My experience has been so good I purchased a Withings Body + Scale too.

If the next generation somehow included Google Wallet & Google Play I'd buy Withings gear for a long time into the future. Great product - recommended.

1.0 out of 5 starsNot at all accurate
Reviewed in Australia on 18 December 2019
I wanted to upgrade from a Garmin Vivosmart 4 HR, and made a huge mistake by getting this Steel HR Sport. I did so after reading some reviews. I found the following problems.
The length of stride cannot be adjusted. It is set at 0.8 metre (my walking stride is 0.75 metre), so all distances are incorrect. Also, there is no difference in stride between running and walking.
The calories used is hoplessly inaccurate. I consume 2,200 - 2,600 per day, depending upon my exercise routine. The Steel never showed more than 1,700. It never recorded calories burned at gym on the cross-trainer or the bike, which usually were 300+.
Unlike the Garmin, it does not recognise when you are on a cross-trainer, or stepper machine, or rowing machine. So this exercise is never shown or recognised on the app at all. The only thing shown is the steps walking to and from the gym.
The only use for this watch, in my opinion, is to count steps and monitor your sleep. Even the max heart rate recorded is inaccurate. I have exchanged several emails with Withers support (no local phone presence) and their only comment was that they would suggest my problems as a software upgrade in due course. I have had the watch for 5 days and hope that Amazon will take it back.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.

I love this watch, it does exactly what I wanted:
Look like a traditional watch, while providing basic fitness tracking.

It is my first fitness tracker, and I didn't need any crazy features. Just time, heart rate, calories burnt. This does an incredibly accurate job of tracking these.

The one criticism I have of this watch is that is uses regular glass for the watch face, rather than crystal sapphire - so be prepared for scratches.

If you don't want something like a fitbit, which screams "fitness tracker", this is the watch for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well, except vibration
Reviewed in Australia on 9 March 2019

Overall, a stylish watch. Does most things well, except that the vibration is quite weak & hard to feel if you're walking, driving, carrying a coffee, etc. I think this is probably due to the watch being rather thin & the physical limitation of the buzzer size. Coming from other smart watches in the past, this is certainly less strong. It's a compromise between style & function. Unfortunately, I think it's too much towards style in this regard.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great watch (with a couple of drawbacks)
Reviewed in Australia on 20 May 2019
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
Pros:
- Looks great
- Impressive battery life
- Comfortable strap

Cons:
- Poor 3rd party app integration (I'm most disappointed that I haven't been able to register my cycling rides on Strava; although whether this is Withings' fault or Strava's fault is another question)
- I'm not convinced of the sleep tracker's accuracy (recording sleep when i'm just lying in bed reading)

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as smart

this smart watch is not as smart as you would expect, problems with steps accuracy which is debatable on their site, and the button is easy to push in the middle of a workout so your session is paused or even stoped.
looks good,

So far, there is no issue with this watch, except the screen is easy to scratch. Screen protector is really required for this product.

Monitoring your sleep is inaccurate. I took the watch off 2 hrs before bed and it said i was in a deep sleep.

Love the appearance, it does everything I need it to, but I have to re- sync it every morning, so it won’t stay connected to the app on my iOS device

4.0 out of 5 stars The smart watch if you don't want to look like a geek...
Reviewed in Australia on 14 June 2019

Very good hybrid implementation of smart watch features into an, umh, smart looking watch. Surprisingly usable display which scrolls through email subjects, messages, reminders, etc. . Battery lasts about 3 weeks where notifications and wake-up alarm is used regularly. Accuracy for this kind of tracker is ok I think, as it is more about the relative numbers (did I do more steps, etc. today than yesterday?) rather than absolute accuracy. This is my second Withings watch and the only criticism I could offer is that the watch glass is just plastic and scratches easily. It would be good to see Withings in their next iteration take this on board (currently better glass only with 'special edition').

4.0 out of 5 stars Great-looking hybrid design
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 March 2019

Have had the Withings Steel HR Sport for around a month now, and have been generally pleased with it.

As hoped at this price point, the watch comes in premium packaging - box inside opens like a book and has a magnetic clasp to secure. Watch, charger and instruction manual inside.

In terms of hardware, this is brilliant; the watch looks great, and is quite slim-line too. I personally much prefer this hybrid design to generic smartwatches, as it keeps the traditional analogue face. I went for the black version, as I preferred the sleek design and it also means the digital display blends in to the overall watch face better. Watch hands are quite thin to allow visibility over the digital display, but there are small red accent colours at the top of the hands to make them easier to see at a glance. When in the dark, can simply press the side button on the watch to wake up the digital display to see the time. The watch feels premium, solid and well made; I have not had any issues with scratches or marks thus far. The strap is also very good quality and breathable, however I will likely buy a replacement leather strap for when I am not tracking exercise. I have not used the watch whilst in the shower or swimming, so cannot comment on its waterproofing etc. Charging is also very fast.

Software-wise, the watch has been good on the whole, but could do with a few minor improvements. The Health Mate app is easy to use and has an attractive interface. Initial set up was very easy; simply download the app, it recognises the watch, and then sets the time through your phone. Maintains bluetooth connection well, although I have noticed the range isn't great (i.e. sometimes notifications don't come through on the watch if I go into a different room from where my phone is). Syncing with the app is mostly fine, but can sometimes seem slow. Connected GPS only seemed to work automatically once for me before - doesn't seem to pick up location anymore, but maybe I need to start the activity with the app open on my phone for it to register. Haven't found the V02Max estimation option yet. Notifications are clear and easy to read as the scroll across the display, and the vibration alerts are good. However, notifications don't always seem to come through 100% of the time on the watch, and quite often the symbol of the app shows without then displaying the message. Most common social media apps are supported, but not all apps. Therefore hoping that Withings provide future software updates to iron out these issues and make it slightly more reliable.

I have been very impressed with the fitness tracking - monitors steps, heartrate and sleep well. Activity tracking is easy to start from the watch itself, by holding down the side button. The watch is capable of tracking all sorts of activities, and you can set your favourites to choose from on the watch. It also recognises activity without having started any recording; quite often the watch has recognised I have been playing football without me telling it I was doing any activity (also very impressed that it knew I was playing football and not just running). Sleep tracking has worked well for me too, and has been accurate.

Overall, I have been pleased with this watch - it is a more premium choice with great design, meaning I can wear it everywhere whether going to work or gym. Very high quality hardware, and software generally good but hoping for some improvements/updates to the GPS connectivity and reliability of notifications. Quite a high price point which is justified by the quality and design, but in terms of smartwatch/fitness tracking capabilities, there may be cheaper alternatives.
