5.0 out of 5 starsThe single most useful book I've ever read.
Reviewed in Australia on 17 December 2018
That's a big statement, I know, but David Goggins has such a unique, refreshing, and honest way of looking at things that unless you're intellectually and emotionally comatose (or would like to be), you can't help but grow as you read. After decades of conscious self-discovery I thought I knew myself well. Goggins showed me how I only knew the areas I wanted to know, and how the unexamined areas had been mud wrestling me behind the scenes for years. I'm going to come right out and say the one thing I never expected to say in a review: If in your life you're only going to read one book that will mess you up and set you right, you can't get better than this one.

1.0 out of 5 starsLooks like a fake copy
Reviewed in Australia on 14 April 2021
The quality of the print is terrible. It looks like a fake copy. I have compared my copy to the ones at the stores and its different. The ones at the store have much better printing and better quality paper. Avoid this version as it ruins the experience of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most important individuals of our generation

A year ago, I survived a heart attack, age 30 - doctors told me I couldn't be able to do anything too physical in the future, and that I need to take it easy for the rest of my life. I couldn't handle this, as I refused to accept the advice of clinicians locally here, who relied heavily on out-dated research and mostly knew how to help a much older group of people. Feeling very alone, I started researching cardiologists and athletes with a heart condition, and this guy David Goggins shows up.

Ever since then I've been following and consuming every piece of material and interview he has made - his advice and his philosophies to life was instrumental in helping me complete the very challenging Kokoda track in Papua New guinea a year after my heart attack - I climbed 6 mountains in 7 days in extreme tropical mud and heart, listening to David's voice in the back of my head.

The important thing about Goggins is he's a normal guy who's been through some tough challenges in life, and has come out on top. There is no end to the challenges though, and he's pretty much going to tell you what you already know - this is all hard work. This book teaches you, through his experiences, how to embrace the intensity, how to face your demons, and how to commit to your goals, and the dangers of "living happily ever after"

Get on to it. Oh and if you're someone who complains about profanity and bad language, then don't f***ing read this book. Stay hard.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Powerful Book I've Read.
Reviewed in Australia on 15 December 2018

This is without a doubt the most powerful, moving and inspiring book I've ever read, and I do read a lot. Reading Can't Hurt Me makes you take inventory of your life and gives you the spark to seek out challenges and be more than you thought you ever could be. To say the story of David Googins is remarkable is the understatement of a lifetime. This man has achieved so much and pushed his body and mind far beyond what most would believe to be humanly possible. But he wasn't always like this. He grew up poor, abused physically and mentally, suffered a learning disability, became obese. And then he saw a documentary on the Navy Seals, which changed everything for him. Through a combination of self-doubt, dissatisfaction, and a burning desire to see who he could be and what he could amount to, so Goggins began possibly the most remarkable human transformation ever documented. By developing a hardcore work ethic, and redirecting my internal dialogue, I now feel like anything is possible if I get after it.

My goodness, why do people criticize the swear words!? I started reading expecting to be inundated with swearing and honestly, it's very mild and completely appropriate...If I had gone through all he had I also should be given free rein on the swearing.
What a great book...I can't recommend it enough. I am so happy I bought it. I struggle with chronic PTSD ...meaning I have to endure similar events on a regular basis as well as regular triggers...this is the first anything to give me some hope to facing it all and developing resilience to it. I may actually have a great life after all...I may even become a valuable and inspiring member of society... How wonderful. Thankyou David...Go Goggins!
FYI - I'm a female in her late 40's... if this gives more context.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roger that!

The raw truth of a harsh reality that isn’t sugar coated is refreshing. I found similarities in childhood challenges that were of the same ilk but in different times and varied circumstances.

If you have read the book, buy the audio and listen to it, as I found the way it was recorded with extra dialogue by David was an incredible layer that cemented the lessons he is sharing.

Can’t hurt me demonstrates by example that the worst people can try to do to you is not possible without your participation and consent. It highlights how being comfortable stunts our growth and denies our dreams.

It’s time to get uncomfortable, to hold ourselves to account and to prove to ourselves that we can dig deep to do far more than we conceived possible. All told by a man who lives this mantra and proves it, every single day.

I truly loved this book and enjoyed the audio even better.

5.0 out of 5 stars You should, no, must, read this book.

Firstly, I am surprised by the several comments on this book that criticize the author's cursing language in this book. Are they real comments?! If cursing/swearing offends you, please let me say this book is NOT for you. Further, even if the author did not swear throughout his book, if swearing offends you, this book is NOT for you. You purchase & opt to read a book based on a man's life, his journey into the military (hardcore mofos), & his climb to supreme fitness - basically a book on being a hardcore, tough mofo - & you are shocked by his use of swearing? This book is NOT for you.

If you are not offended, and want a straight to the point, down to earth read that will benefit some element of your life in some way, you must read this book. You not only read the words on the pages of this book, but you will also feel -emotionally- connected to the author.

Goggins is a serious, tough individual & he expresses that & how it can help you in your life in some way.

An excellent read , David Gogins is a great example how A healthy individual should deal with their lives, especially when they think they are being hard done by ..

If your Black , White , Straight or Gay .. Get over it ! and get on with it . Professional victimhood is a cop out , and guess what ? Discrimination is Illegal anyway . If people want to be prejudice in this day and age ... then they are the ones with the problem .

Gogins rises above and beyond , he sets his goals according to his own limits .. I admire this gentleman’s story and what he has done with his life immensely.

You start to see how everyone, including yourself, plateau. The mind works very hard to provide a consistent worldview - which means avoiding painful realities. When you face pain, your mind is reduced to rubble and your life must be rebuilt from the foundations, like a baby learning to walk.

No one wants to start from zero. No one. It's embarrassing, shameful. Some are lucky and have acquired sufficient wealth or fame that they don't need to change.

But if you can at any moment rebuild your mind, then what would be possible?

Honestly loved this book and found it truly inspiring.
The way it is written and his story is amazing.
Well thought out, and a lot more realistic than I expected - when I first heard of Goggins, I thought omg this guy is straight up wired differently and has something wrong with him, but he truly mastered the art of using his mind to overcome so much and provides guidance on how we can all improve ourselves, become stronger and more mentally tough.

This is a story about his life, what he learned about himself and techniques to apply to your own life. He is not trying to turn the reader into another Goggins and he stresses that; he only wants you to be the best you whatever that might be. It really deserves to be studied rather than just read as virtually every page has a little gem that need to be captured and used in reflection. Don’t be put off by the language (I wasn’t but some are) as that’s all part of his story and how he tells it. Sanitising the language would dilute the message. Meant to be read and re-read as I’m doing.
