5.0 out of 5 starsHistorical interest plus tense action.
Reviewed in Australia on 27 July 2022
This text takes the reader into the era of social and political change in England in 1909-1910. The suffragette movement and the arrival of the motor car are changing traditional ways of thinking and living. Lady Hardcastle and Flo are surrounded by an expanding collection of adversaries and allies from varied classes and occupations as they solve two intertwined cases. This novel also broadens the focus from country village life to an urban environment and is a welcome example of their individual skills when they are confronted by an intricate international and financial crime.

My kind of book after reading a few thrillers. Relaxed reading.

Hier passt der Begriff "Gepflegte Langeweile". Mehrere Damen verdächtigen mehrere Herren, einen Brand gelegt zu haben, für den eine Suffragette verantwortlich gemacht wird. Ziemlich langweilig.

I usually love Lady Hardcastle books. This one was all over the place. Too many characters to keep up with, too many side stories and overall not very interesting. I figured out who the killer was almost immediately and the rest of the book was just filler.

2.0 out of 5 stars Features the wrong sleuth

Lady Hardcastle and Flo are a delightful pair of sleuths and I whole heartedly recommend the prior books in this series. Unfortunately, they aren't the detectives here. The bulk of the book is devoted to them waiting for someone else to decode notes left by the person who really figured everything out.

The only redeeming quality here is the return and further development of Diana Caudle.

I’m struggling to finish this one. I love the other books in the series though, this one just doesn’t have the “oomph” to keep me going.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not easy to get into

I think this book needed to be a box set so you knew the characters for in this book there was very little explanation of who they were and who was talking. I found it hard to follow and didn’t grip my interest.

I always enjoy these books, this one fell short at the end. Disappointed :(
