5.0 out of 5 starsQuiet masterpiece
Reviewed in Australia on 22 November 2019
It’s true what they say - Elizabeth Strout is a masterly writer. Here, in a series of vignettes about various people in the town of Crosby, Maine, that almost reads like a series of short stories, we discover the ins and outs of Olive’s later life, because they all know Olive. Of course some of the vignettes are directly about Olive herself. It sometimes feels inconsequential, but in hearing about the mundane details of ordinary lives a picture is built of a whole culture and its idiosyncratic denizens. Olive is as straightforward as ever , her bluntness making us smile, but although she’s insightful (usually), about others, she’s been less insightful about herself and her somewhat strained relationships with, for example, her son. At the end, when she’s well into her eighties and typing up some memories, she thinks: “I do not have a clue who I have been. Truthfully, I do not understand a thing”. Nevertheless, she’s impacted many lives significantly and this book is a marvellous meditation on aging and the growing of wisdom. Which sounds simple but isn’t. There’s many a fine nuance to be traversed.

1.0 out of 5 starsDreary and depressing
Reviewed in Australia on 4 January 2020
Loved #1Olive, and ES is an amazing writer but honestly, this book is the most depressing book I have ever read ... a load of incessant hyphens and boring narrative of she said and then he said and she said and then she said ... it was so monotonous in its sameness no matter whose story was being told, and each story increasingly so dreadfully depressing. Goodness, what an exciting life we all have to look forward to in old age.... if that is the point of it all. And the only take-away from it ; there is no point to it all. How sad.

La he dejado sin terminar. No me merece la pena por su baja calidad literaria. Es lo que se dice en inglés trashy literature. Escenas vulgares con descripción vulgar.

2.0 out of 5 stars don't get sucked in like i did by Oprah's enthusiasm for this novel

I bought this book as Oprah says you are going to love this book. I found this novel to be dreary and unlikeable. I thought to myself just give it a chance, read on it must get better but it never did. I read it to the end and if you aren't enjoying the book's first few chapters it pretty much just continues on the same way.

2.0 out of 5 stars Foul-Mouthed and Repetitive

I had just read Olive Kitteridge for the first time right before Olive, Again was released, and I enjoyed it very much. I then downloaded and watched the miniseries, so I was all ready to dive into the sequel on its publication day. I expected to be moved by the new book, as I had definitely been by the original novel.

But that was not the case.

First of all, I was put off by Elizabeth Strout’ far More frequent use of foul language in this book than had been found in Olive Kitteridge. In that book, the strong obscenities that existed were pretty much confined to certain characters or situations. Olive, Again includes a steady stream of profanity, with the blasphemous use of Christ’s name virtually nonstop. While I understand that that is not offensive to some people, I found it distracting and deeply disappointing.

I was also turned off by the fact that Ms. Strout seems obsessed with extramarital affairs as a plot line throughout these stories. To be honest, I found that to be tedious and unimaginative.

The final section of the book was a refreshing and touching return to form. I just wish that I had found the entire book that enjoyable and engaging.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just read Olive Kitterage

Loved Olive Kitterage, except for the unnecessary "Hey, I hate George Bush too everybody" signaling by the author. One of my favorite books. So looking forward to this one. So disappointed. Disjointed, nowhere near the insight and emotion of the first book of stories. Olive doesn't seem like Olive anymore. And of course, so annoyed at the 'orange man bad' insertion of the author, again, portraying the truck-driving trump on the bumper sticker nurses aide as a racist-of course. I refer you to a passage from this book where Olive remarks that the famous poet from the many students she had taught wasn't that impressive. Well, these unnecessary political virtue signals by the author made me realize that though she writes beautifully, the author's need to bash Republicans diminishes the work. Shame.

2.0 out of 5 stars Strout's disappointing and weakest effort

This is a disjointed effort that falls flat, and if you haven't read and REMEMBERED all the odds and ends of characters from her previous books this book will make NO SENSE whatsoever. I have enjoyed her previous books, but this one is appetizing as floor sweepings from the local butcher. Also, it was not missed that there was a little plug for the coup plotters towards the end of this book...thrown in as if it had been mandated by the publishing house..about "orange man Bad", it's always a pity to see some writer pimped for the political purposes, it's happening now just as it did
before WW1 and WW11 when publishing houses made it a practice for popular writers to be used to vilify the leader/country that the banking families wanted to go to war with...these days it's Orange Man Bad.

I enjoyed the first three quarters of this book. It was fun, interesting and full of great characters. The writer has the wonderful ability to bring everyday people to life. Many times the irony of her writing and the situations are humorous and memorable . The last quarter of the book dealt with end of life stories and was dreadfully depressing. We all experience different phases at the end of our lives but the lack of hope and horrific physical problems depicted are truly dreadful. For these reasons I would not recommend this book
