How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

2.0 out of 5 stars More shallow than I expected

Tough one. The premise was good, the action and description engaging, definitely. Decent writing. But something was off. I imagine narrating as a 16 year old is incredibly hard. I think some of the narrative could have been left up to the reader to devise. It’s Not a ‘bad’ book. My main issue was the lack of acknowledgement of loss and grief in the story. There is no ‘letting go’, when you lose a child. Never. Never. There seemed to be more focus on a rekindling of a physical relationship between the parents than anything else. I kept waiting for the mother to break down. But nothing. I just felt that was the oddest thing. And the authors note the end left me feeling like the book was written in a vengeful way. Don’t like to leave a critical review but I will say, don’t write lightly about the loss of a child.

2.0 out of 5 stars Was disappointed

The critics were quite high so I "tried" this novel, but could not even finished it. Sorry, but the main narrator is too fake and too unreal. Also the other characters are also too unreal in their behavior. Sorry, but this is not "worth" the critics. Very disappointed. Clo from Canada

2.0 out of 5 stars I cannot figure why there were so many 5 star reviews

This book came via Amazon first reads, and among the group, had the best reviews. The story seemed like it could have promise, and so I figured I’d give it a shot.

I’d call it a decent book for teens. I can see a middle of high schooler taking this in and being touched by its emotions. But for an adult the simplicity just doesn’t cut it. I read the book cover to cover in a few days but without needing it or wanting it. More than that, I wanted to get through it, hoping there would be some epiphany.

If you’re under 20, this one might resonate. For anyone else, I’d say skip it.

2.0 out of 5 stars From page turner to drudgery "in an instant."

The initial 1/3 of this book was fascinating. I was totally absorbed in this incredibly perilous survival tale until the crisis is resolved. Then, it turned into a Young Adult book with all the "wisdom" and drama that one gets from a teenage girl. I kept waiting for some answers or revelations, or even a twist that doesn't involve a crazed father kidnapping his daughter's boyfriend (for some innocuous reason) ; or a thinly drawn, shallow affair between two of the main characters; two of the parents for crying out loud. I saw all of these 5 star reviews and I went into this book headlong, hoping for a contemplative psychological thriller. Instead, I got a, nice, but uninteresting ghost to follow around, again, for some reason. Characters using the word "anyways" instead of anyway just annoys me. Very disappointed with this tome.

2.0 out of 5 stars Want to finish a book in a bad mood with a headache - here it is.

Two stars for good editing and formatting - except for the over use of 'eyes slid'. There were eyeballs sliding all over the place throughout. I cannot go into details about why the bad mood/headache because this would end up as one of those plot rehash reviews. You'll have to trust me on the emotional result of spending the time with this book and the people in it. I do have to give one SPOILER ALERT because it is such an unthinkable plot point somebody has to do it, and it was my fictional last straw: no one found the missing boy's body and yet Easter dinner went off without a hitch and his parents even reconciled with a bit of slap-and-tickle. Now. I ask you.

2.0 out of 5 stars What?!?

I am so disappointed. I was loving the book, crying my eyes out, staying up late and then it ends like that. What the heck!? So the parents decide to just toss everything and forgot they had other kids? The mom didn’t say how crappy of a parent she was? I feel like there was a lot that needed to be said and figured out. Only two stars because it started out great but ended bad and incomplete.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't get it

I bought this book because of all the positive reviews, but I don't understand all the 4 and 5 star ratings. Giving this book 2 starts was being generous. I forced myself to finish because I paid for it, but I really enjoyed little to none of this story. In my opinion, the plot is childish, better suited for a young adult read. The first quarter of the book was drudgery, but I knew I needed to hang in there to get to the accident. I felt the description of the accident was shallow. When Finn's parents, especially her mother, had little to no reaction to their daughter lying dead in the front seat, I knew this book was over for me. The fact that her mother stripped her daughter's body of her clothing, then basically had the body thrown outside the camper into the snow was ridiculous and scoff-out-loudable. Finn's death is barely mentioned throughout their survival ordeal, as well as the rest of the book.

The remaining story digressed even further into continued drudgery, with characters I couldn't (or didn't want to) sympathize with...basically a family of emotionally stunted, callous people. A sister who focuses only on her wedding, with the only show of emotion coming 5 weeks after Finn's death, when she sheds a tear and admits to her fiance that she wishes her sister were there. A mother who, immediately after her young daughter's death, dives headlong into an affair with her neighbor, but still finds time to toss everything Finn owned out of the second story window into the yard shortly after returning home. Amid all this absurdity, the author manages to make it worse by developing several teen romances that would have been difficult for me to care less about. Yuk, yuk, yuk.
