4.0 out of 5 starsA nice mixture of history and romance, and also very topical in this COVID-19 situation.
Reviewed in Australia on 14 May 2020
Really enjoyed this fictional story on the North Heads quarantine station located near Sydney. The story is told in parallel timelines.
In the present Emma is trying to help her elderly grandmother, Gwendoline, who has dementia and keeps wandering from her care facility searching for someone. She knows that her grandmother was born at the quarantine station but left there very suddenly when she was about 6 years old. Emma starts searching for information about her grandmothers past and finds romance in the process of doing so.
In the parallel story we go back to 1918 and Rose Porter who has fled an arranged marriage in England to find herself alone and desperate for work in Sydney. She applies for a job at the quarantine station and changes her life forever.

Well Read
3.0 out of 5 starsInteresting setting, competently written, but not ground-breaking
Reviewed in Australia on 15 December 2021
I finished this kindle book, and enjoyed the setting. There were very few typographical errors present, which was gratifying. Somewhere though, "drawer" was written as "draw". As a West Australian, I'm aware that kangaroo paws do not grow wild in the Sydney area. The "emerald" aspect was not at all convincing, and reduced the credibility of the storyline. Can you imagine a hugely valuable emerald being placed around the neck of a baby while in a maternity hospital? While the writing was competent, it was not great writing. The soapy love and sex scenes detracted from the book. But most of the plot was intriguing.

Wow - just WOW! I have just finished β€œThe Quarantine Station” by Michelle Montebello and it was brilliant!

Firstly, I had never heard of the Quarantine Station and enjoyed researching and reading about the history. Now I want to go and stay there!

Secondly the story line was incredible. I literally could not put it down and when I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about the plot and what could happen next! So many twists that blended beautifully to make a fabulous story line. Thank you Michelle. Now I want to read your other books!

If you haven’t read it, pick yourself up a copy as you won’t be disappointed! ❀️

I enjoyed reading about the quarantine station. History is always of interest to me. It was all rather coincidental, convenient and some what predictable which drains my enthusiasm for a book. An ok read.

I was amazed to actually learn so much about the Q Station. I lived in Sydney, knew it was there, but not that it was was such a gigantic operation and that it had been open to the public. I thought the story line was good except the part about the Royals was a bit far fetched.

I enjoyed this book immensely. The way the story shifts between two timelines makes it intriguing. Just when you think you have figured it out another factor emerges that throws new light on the story.
By the end of the book I started wondering about how little I knew of my own family history. It also highlights how valuable keeping a diary or journal can be to providing a genuine source of historical information.

Loved this story both the historical tale and the present one. They were entwined beautifully. I felt an attachment to the characters and felt happy and sad along with them.
