4.0 out of 5 starsNot too shabby
Reviewed in Australia on 20 November 2019
But Jack has evolved. I like the earlier books better, where he occasionally used the 110th & other resources- and was a lot more self sufficient. The story was better than some of the more recent books, but it could have been any hero - bring back the original Jack Reacher! Some while speculation earlier in the book and then later more options were taken into account. Abby seemed to have a lot of input from someone with her background. But again the story Was easy to follow and the book easy to pick up to keep reading.

1.0 out of 5 starsThis is not jack reacher

Jack is a brawler, yes. But he's always used his brain as well. But now, according to this book, he's nothing but a remorseless killer, mowing down anyone who comes up against him.
The author could have had fun with this, Jack could have played off the two opposing factions. against one another with intention - and no one necessarily had to die. Problem was the author turned jack in to a battering ram of death, and even his wish to help the old couple come across as psychotic rather than defending the rights of the 'little guy'

also the waitress sleeping with Jack - her reasonings? this came off as a male author's fantasy rather than what would happen in real life.

1.0 out of 5 stars Off the rails. Thumbs down.

Huge fan of the Jack Reacher series but this one seems to be a bit off the mark. Reacher seems to have gone gung-ho than his usual practical brutality “as needed”. It didn’t make sense how easy he got his band of vigilantes(?) to join the wagon without a pip. I couldn’t say for sure this is the Jack Reacher Character of the series. I don’t do reviews but this one needs be said just so Mr. Child can go back to his writing board. Simply Off the rails.

3.0 out of 5 stars And another Jack Reacher novel bites the dust!

I am not sure what it is. The character is ilogical, the plot is unbelievable, the style is repetitive, the writing style is bizarre - and yet I have read every Jack Reacher novel. A certain “sameness” to every story, but in a different location, and with different characters. Jack is like a super hero drifting around America, getting involved in people’s lives and sorting out their problems - then just disappearing to the next adventure. Unbelievable - but still a lot of fun to read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring Yawn fest that is almost unreadable

Worst and most implausible book of Reacher series. Raises the question of whether Aurhor is losing passion for writing and is cashing-in . Sadly, it's the first time I have wanted to move on and shelve a Reached novel before half way. Most expensive and worst read thus far.

3.0 out of 5 stars I love Jack Reacher. I love Lee Child. But this book is lacking that something that normally is present when you put these two guys together.

But this time the magic is missing. It is just a massacre of people with the ending so predictable.
Sorry Lee, not your best. Not nearly anywhere near it.
I will wait for your next one with bated breath. AND fingers crossed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Started so well...

Started as a great Reacher story - a great set, even a little humour. The competing gangs of Ukrainians and Albanians ruling the city - and absence of police - is a brilliant set up. As is Reacher helping the little old man - which turns into something much bigger than anyone expected. But the last quarter of the book was just a bloodbath of Tarantesque proportions. I understand that Jack Reacher is a psychopath who's quite willing to kill twenty-plus people in one story but that he then ropes in a random barmaid, her two muso friends and one of their ex-military buddies to kill another twenty-plus is just silly. I felt there could have been a much better ending. But if you like lots of gunfire, there's plenty here.

4 Stars
My personal rating system

1 Star Couldn't finish the book
2 Stars Didn't really like the book, but was interested enough in the story to finish (Skipping great chunks)
3 Stars The book was okay, finished it and will consider reading more from the author
4 Stars Really enjoyed the book, will check out others by this author
4 1/2 Stars Loved the book, will immediately check out others by author, if asked will recommend book
5 Stars LOVED the book, will immediately check out all others by author, will pre-emptively recommend book to ALL my book friends

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be checking out the authors other books looking for more of the same. I found the action and story to be better than the last couple of books, but tie implausibility factor went up, notwithstanding that I still thoroughly enjoyed the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars I found that in this story Reacher was much more like his old self

I hadn't kept up with Jack Reacher for a time although I have read all the books. I found they were losing their punch. Bought this one along with "The Sentinel" which I'm still to read. I found that in this story Reacher was much more like his old self - getting stuck into the baddies from the get go. Pure escapism for me but I did enjoy it. Hope it continues - now if only I could get rid of the thought of Tom Cruise from the back of my mind when reading the Reacher books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just Another White Knight Tale
Reviewed in Australia on 7 December 2019
Verified Purchase
I happen to like White Knight stories, especially if they're about Jack Reacher. Not that he sets out to be one, but invariably he seems to fall into the role. Child's writing has steadily improved since his first book (which I didn't particularly like) to the degree that I'm eagerly looking forward to each new book. Reacher, however, appears to be evolving in a direction that I don't really care for. More Punisher than White Knight. His moral compass seems to be shifting left of centre quite markedly. Given the number of people he personally slew in this book he exhibits no signs of emotional trauma whatsoever. Not healthy and makes me wonder where he's heading. Hopefully Lee Child can right Reacher's moral compass and prevent him from becoming just another implacable killing machine.

Overall, however, this is another very good tale and is well worth reading.
